I understand Fred, it's just that I care passionately about my job. Perhaps too much.

Unfair. We get a lot of info from Anthony Coulls as to what's afoot at the NRM and you should respect that.

I was referring to NRM as an organisation, not Mr Coulls as an individual. We are all grateful for Mr Coulls taking the time to post what information he can on this forum, but I doubt he would claim to be the voice of the NRM itself.

Somewhat unfair on your good self Mr Coulls. You have always struck me as a voice of reason, knowledge and passion on these forums. Passion for one's job is very a good thing, and may I say your passion for your job is inspiring.

Would I be correct in saying today, 24th February is the 90th birthday of this iconic locomotive?

Has their been any work done on the engine since the "story" about the possible cylinder issue broke cover?
I would not be surprised if the answer is none , i would expect that the staff at York would have been told no more expentiture on that loco till the report is in, and then the bean counters who now are in charge of governmental funded museums would be looking to cut back on expenditure. would have stopped the funding anyway. i still fully expect 4472 to be placed on static display for the time being and returned to steam once the museum can afford to.

I wouldn't be surprised, bearing in mind how government budgeting works, if it was 'no more this financial year' (i.e. before 1st April) with future budgeting and timescale guided to some extent by whatever the report says about the work needed to finish the job. But it would be politically dumb to cancel the project. Although the delays and large overspend has been a bit of a scandal it would be much worse if the museum was forced to announce it had achieved nothing for all that time and money.

    Aha,
So That is the cunning plan is it,
Why get it going now and have it in bits for the 100th birthday in 10 years time, when with a little well managed delay we can be sure it will be running out of Kings cross pulling a train on it's 100th,
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant, i do not know why i did not twig that before.
    Well done guys and gals,
I will look forward to it, ( no really i will)
( any idea of the livery and headboard it will be sporting for the day and will the tickets be on sale soon)

If the overhaul was canceled, I would expect the national press to be all over it, Flying Scotsman is afterall global fame it's not some tank engine... They love government failure stories.
i doubt it would be canceled, it would be too political

You'd be surprised what important funding/projects the government can quietly cancel and the press don't pick up on.

I might be. But do you really think it would be possible to cancel this project without the press picking up on it?

Not sure if that'd work, the clock is already ticking on the boiler, if i remember right. Then there's the 10 years never really lasting 10 years...

Considering the press have ignored or failed to do an article on the fact that Nick Clegg has 15 special advisors employed, then yes.

I love conspiracy theories. Once upon a day we went from month to month with the only news being in the magazines, now we clamour for knowledge every day...do not take silence for inaction.
