I never saw one of these in service. I've seen photos of them in GWR chocolate & cream and in BR carmine & cream. Were any ever painted in green please?

No, that one's a Dia. C.77 Collett Corridor Third No. 1096 built 1938

This is 1116 (built on the same Lot No. as 1096) on the SVR:—

    Six examples survive:—

    From the 1938 batch - 1086, 1087, 1116, 1146 (SVR) & 1111 (GWS Didcot).
From the 1940 batch - 536 (GWS on loan to SDR).

Around 1950 - plus or minus a couple of years - and around 8.15 am in the location adjacent to the North Warwickshire line where I then lived - the usual 5100 class loco and its train was replaced by a GWR diesel rail consisting of the two railcars and a centre car. These were in the GWR colours. I believe to train originated in Cardiff and was destined for Birmingham Moor Street; it seemed to have limited stops and turned a good speed when I saw or heard it. Both versions regularly ran on time and were better than a clock as signal to leave home for school.. The railcar service did not last that long as far as I recall. I moved to Devon in 1954 but cannot say I ever saw one in the south of the county. I never saw them in maroon or green: I believe I am fortunate in that. ;)

I've mentioned this before but I really would love to see W22W back at Bridgnorth again. Slightly unusual looking but rather nice.

It nearly happened some years back... The plan was for the Chiltern heritage bubble car to tow it up, but the deal with fell through at the last moment. Unless something similar could be organised, it's unlikely to stray from Didcot as it can't be low-loadered anywhere due to its very limited ground clearance.

Can't see it getting turned out with W's for the foreseeable future either.

The interior has changed a bit since its SVR days; gone is the red crowsfoot stuff & it now sports replica 1940 cloth with matching lino:

Just needs some green curtains to top it off :)

Didn't somthing similer happen in about 1990? Except I think it was Tyseley DMU depot that managed the move. I like the intirior pic could do with showing that to modern train designers. Call me old fashioned but little things like lining up the seats with the windows so the passenger takes advantage of natural light and can see out the window is a rather nice concept.

That rings a bell - I **think** it had its tyres turned whilst it was there.

Don't get me started. Once upon a time Function dictated Form, nowadays that seems to be reversed - note the luggage racks in 22... unlike the Virgin Pantylino's & FGW's Explodalantes you can actually put *luggage* in them! That said, I reckon Swindon missed a trick with these... that interior tricked out like the 1937 Excursion Stock would have been fabulous.

Could well be Nick, they'd at least need to be tested for cracks.

I remember seeing a pic of it going through Banbury I think it was being towed by a 117 or somthing similer and W22W was full of Managment! Going back to interiors I came home for a few days last summer and met Dad in Kiddy out of a 365, Pendilino, 172, LMS set and BR MK1 what one do you think was most comfertable?

    Hello,
I was informed by some one in the know that in the early days on the SVR they hit 60 mph in the railcar.
I will post a comment on FB..see what people say to 22 returning to the SVR.....would also look good on the WSR maybe 1 or 2 other longish railways.....
    :)

Over 30 years ago, a four wheeled railcar allegedly also ran at 60mph between Weybourne & Sherringham so the Sunday PW gang got back in time for a pint before the (then 2.00pm) closing time.
