What was the problem on the Weymouth run the other day?
Initial reports said it was a brake problem, then it seemed to turn into an injector/water supply issue.

Whatever it was she sounded and looked fine when she went back to Slough with support coach on the Saturday after the problems - so must have been passed as fit to run, presumably to get back to base for whatever problem was to be checked and sorted DH

Which only goes to show how unreliable 'initial' reports can be.

I hadn't realised anyone did rely on "initial" reports Ralph.

It's a point of interest only. surely ?

Regarding the problems on the Weymouth trip the other week, according to the latest SR it seems the water in the tender was too hot, 28 degrees C /82 degrees F, causing the injectors not to work. Standing at Yeovil in the sun the previous week was blamed. Didn't think 28 degrees was that hot, mentions it is a comfortable swimming temperature.

    That sounds like editorial BS.

I know perfectly well that injectors don't like hot water or indeed being hot but, if the water was too hot it would have been picked up at Yeovil during prep, however a leaking clack or steam valve will heat up an injector and make it refuse to pickn up.

    Cheers Dave

There was some mention of a similar problem on here before, and someone worked out the amount of energy required to heat up 5000 gallons of water. Basically, it's impossible for the sun to do that.

I would not say it's impossible, solar heating can raise water to 50 deg C quite easily. OK a tender full would take quite a long time but if ambient had been 20 deg for a few days, sitting in the sun on a hot day could increase that by a few degrees.

Probably, but we don't know how long it was standing there. Too may variables, all I am saying is it's not impossible.

Maybe not but I recall an aunt of mine having huge outside water tank and even in the hottest summer I don't recall the water being anything but cool. There must be a formula somewhere to calculate such things.

Says it was standing at Yeovil Junction for a week, in "unseasonably sunny weather".

I seem to recall from my school days 1 calory heats 1 cc of water 1 deg C. Simple extrapolation required..

And the metal tender would conduct heat very well...

5000 galls is 18927059cc and say we need a 20ºC raise in temperature, that's 378541180 calories. Now work out the calorific value of sunlight, conductivity of the tender and how much of that heat will be radiated away overnight and there's your answer. Doesn't seem that simple to me.

Water takes a long time to warm up and cool down, so I think that the sun may not have been able to warm it in this case

Every time I've been to Dubai, the Open air swimming pools are like ice !!! And they don't cool the water i'm absolutely sure.

Also osmosis... How would water get warmer than the ambient air that surrounds it without a heating element ?
nil points from me in this bedtime time story.

My guess ..I would imagine it would have been a warm supply of water filled into the tender unnoticed, that's happened to other locos before.
