That's a useful addition. Managed a first trip behind her on Sunday. A fairly subdued run but I'm sure there will be noisier ones to come.

Busby as you know Steve is the founder member of playschool and was my driver when I used to be one of the playschool fireman. It has to be his fault that I know ways of preventing the valves from going up other than stuffing the boiler! \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

I think Pat could have done with the same knowledge at times today!

Manston was doing her thing of steaming on next to nothing. Another bulleid that only needs a candle in the front corners to set her off! =D> =D>

From your post I presume Pat 'tested' the safety valves more than once during her turn :-k

My response is NOT meant to be catty even if it might be construed that way - I have to say that when Pat has the breadth and years of experience you have then I might expect her to emulate your firing - until then the education/fault remedying continues I suspect .......

Many years ago I was told (by a now retired, lifetime footplate man) that - "the day you stop learning, when working with steam locos, is the day you retire from the footplate".
Even on our bog-standard DMUs no two trips are ever the same so when it comes to all the variables of steam locomotion ....

Niether was I! I had a meeting without coffee once when firing squadron. One of those days when I just could not keep her quiet no matter what I did every time I was in Swanage. The day I think I'm perfect is the day to stop doing this as I'll be dangerous!

I dont think it will be going a whole week before the event, think it will be more like a couple of days before.

Oh and anne and pete can we discuss our footplate work and personal on our own forum, dont think pat would really like to read what you are writing about her on this very public forum.....

But I learnt to fire on J94s and other industrials. With 5 on it should be a challenge. It was so long ago it will be nice to see if I still have the skills.

Good for you Ann! If you can competently fire an Austerity(J94 is the LNER variant and shouldn't be confused-although there are 2 in preservation)-you can fire anything.Someone with your level of experience should have no trouble with 5 on-on a flat railway like the Swanage Branch.

If we are really being pedantic, isn't it actually a Hunslet '50550' class loco - 'Austerity' could equally apply to the 2-10-0 and 2-8-0 WD (er, is that an LNER Class O7??!!!) loco's :-k

Either a tongue in cheek reply or you havent been to Swanage.....

Whilst not the steepest in the country a 1:76 (i think) for 2 miles isnt what you would call flat...
