If you were a rich person , what steam loco class would you like to see built for preserved lines or the national network? [IMG]

If I was just having one built for my personal pleasure, without heed to what might be useful or easy to maintain, then it would be a late series Bulldog

    (a) The Adams Single - it was never built, but sketched out on the drawing board and was an almost unbelievably graceful. (Probably easiest to imagine a 4-2-2 version of the NRM/ Shildon's Adams T3). Broadly contemporary with the brief resurgence of "singles" that accompanied the invention of steam sanding in the 1880s - along with the Dean, Stirling, Johnson, Caley etc varieties.

    (b) Slightly more feasible, but even madder - rebuilt the Drummond "Bug" 4-2-4T inspection saloon. You could even claim it was a rebuild rather than a new build, on the grounds the carriage section still survives in garden (http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=2610) Would be a great addition for the heritage line of your choice that can turn an engine each end and can afford a complete frivolity with minimal revenue-generating potential...

I would look at a completely new loco, along the lines of the 5AT, but with A4 style streamlining.
Maximum perfomance in a aerodynamic shape.
Get it certified for max speed, to run at similar speeds to current traffic for maximum pathing.

Well, how about a Grange, Patriot, Clan, Hawksworth County, B17 Sandringham, NER G5, GER Holden F5, LBSC Atlantic, 82xxx? Pretty well covered already thank you! OK, if you want me to name one that isn't yet under way then I'd go for either a North British MSWJR 4-4-0 or the Caledonian Railway's finest - 4-6-0 Cardean.

Midland/LMS '2P' 4-4-0 and a '3F' 0-6-0 please... Not too big or complicated, would surely suit many preserved lines as well as filling major gaps in preservation.

It's got to be one of the forgotten railways, the NSR their G class locomotives from J.H.Adams 4 built at Stoke very gracefull. Only one NSR locomotive survives and the NRM does not seem interested in restoring it. It's a disgrace.

Either a Drummond 'Black Motor' or a Midland 3F. Or to be completely irrational a Leader, just to make it actually work!

I'm with Jurasik. A new build steam loco utilising the best knowledge, craftsmanship and technology of the 21st Century would be great. The 5AT project is interesting but it looks like the one off streamlining that GWR tried in the 1930's that was rapidly abandoned. Yes, keep with the Stephenson style, but bring a 21st Century design into play. New technology should give the perforamce to run mainline and address the pathing issues of the restored and preserved loco's often run foul of.

An improved version of 6202 the "LMS Turbomotive", but with a 4-8-2 wheel arrangement using 5-foot drivers, plus a 6-bladed reverser turbine (instead of 4-) to ensure that it could shunt its train out of a terminus unaided. With a tractive effort far in excess of 40,000 lb, plus roller bearings everywhere to allow those 5-foots to really shift, the loco should hardly ever slip, "cruise" like a bat out of hell, and be able to handle climbs like Shap as well. Photters would need a flippin fast shutter speed to catch it "rods down" at speed, to the naked eye the simple coupling rod would be just a blur.

An ex NER A8 4-6-2 tank to work on the NYMR certified for Whitby running, a B16/3 main line certified based on the NYMR and Royal George for Beamish. And for the NYMR again a Gresley P1 2-8-2 and finally a V2 so we can see one running (wink wink)
