I'm having a think of a trip over to the Moors later in the year. I've been reading the photo guide which is useful - the steepest section is between Grosmont and Goathland? Which direction is that and do most of the engines face uphill or downhill for it?

The climb is from Grosmont to Goathland and most locos face uphill in my experience. There is a turntable at Pickering but I've never known it be used on a regular basis.

Thanks Ian. It's not a railway I know much about - I can't ever remember visiting it.

According to the NYMR Gala thread all but one loco face Uphill (Southbound). From my experience on the 3 times I have visited ( 2 were gala's ) only 1 loco has been facing Northbound. It is also steep north of Levisham through Newtondale but most loco's are working tender/bunker first. The loco's are still working south of Goathland up to to summit which is south of Moorgates. Moorgates is an easily accessable open location where loco's are still working.

There is talk of turning 45212 to face the same way as the rest.
    Still facing North today though.

I've always had the idea that, in general, the Moors runs West to East. Is this not the case? Is it more (generally speaking) a north - south railway?

45212 is planned to be turned Thursday, I have been told today.

The line does run in a generally "north - south" direction - something that throws many people is that the harbour mouth at Whitby faces due north and the line runs up the river from Grosmont to Whitby.

However, the whole line curves itsway along valleys, so can be heading easterly one minute and northerly the next - making light quite "interesting"!

Let me know when you are coming and if I am about I will try to say hello!
