    But surely they are mainline certified, in that they have passed the necessary brake / axle etc exams and been deemed fit to be hauled over the national network.

    Yes, I was simply making the point that a towing move (and empty) is different from being in regular use on the mainline. From a Bluebell point of view, all four Bulleid carriages, the three Maunsell's, the four Metropolitans, the Victorian four wheelers, LBSCR bogie first and one of the SECR bogie carriages have all been over the mainline in recent years, as have locomotives 592 and 73082. AIUI, it is a question of getting a vehicle acceptance body to pass them, which would include gauging checks, axles, tyres, drawgear inspections etc, and then towing them as a goods train. From a loco point of view, you don't need the usual electronics (because the loco isn't the driving vehicle); and from a carriage point of view you don't have to meet the normal crash impact and other rules (because no passengers are travelling in the move).

    Indeed. I was just clarifying the point because the previous poster was asking about non main line registered vehicles being towed on the main line. When in fact everything has to be registered to a certain extent to be used on the main line, even if not under it’s own power or carrying passengers.

    I have a vague impression that because the 117 / 121 do not meet crashworthiness standards a derogation would have to be granted to allow them to work on the mainline.

    I am afraid to those of us that follow railways in this country it did not seem that unusual. There are TOC's who move stock from rail connected depots by road for overhaul/refurbishment.

    doesn't fit in very well with Mayor of London "Green Pathway" ideas does it. Refurbished at 100,000s of pounds and then transported by road.!! Poor planning and /or bureaucracy winning again.
    Purbecks own "Green Pathway" is waiting for the green signals to show at Worgret and then,despite the naysayers and "Railways in Aspic" aficionados it will be On To Wareham!!

    From the SR thread the new cabinet at Brockenhurst caused problems, otherwise would have been OK.
    Could be when 33012 returns from Eastleigh it might be able to return on the mainline?

    If you go back and re-read this thread, it appears that the reasons the 117 didn't travel by rail were a combination of a new location cabinet at Brockenhurst making it out of gauge, and the Eastleigh Rail Crash occurring just at the point it was due to move, which blocked the lines heading south out of Eastleigh. Sometimes stuff just happens.

    Don't really see what it has to do with the Mayor of London. I am not sure he is busy monitoring the movements of DMUs from Eastleigh to Swanage.

    I'd assume the move would require either - a loco, driver with route knowledge to haul the units, or it would require a driver with route knowledge who can sign for a 117/121, plus route clearance which can change very quickly and something can become out of gauge, FTR etc. You'd then need to arrange a path through Southampton, Bournemouth etc

    But that is a legacy of privatisation as the costs of TOC of moving anything by rail mean it is cheaper, quicker and easier to bring in a road haulier than it is to try to arrange paths, haulage, route clearance etc etc. Obviously there are companies like ROG who seem to specialise in moving things from place to place.

    Actually I think it antedates “privatisation”. Was not a British Railways diesel locomotive stuck on a low loader in built up Exeter and when the obvious question was asked - why was it not being sent on the rails - it turned out that it had appeared that the haulier’s quotation would be cheaper than the internal charge to the cost centre being made responsible for the move. Sectorisation?

    I do believe that the class 117 were moved to Eastleigh by rail. Delays yes but was there any discussion between NR and SR over lineside equipment which then put these units out of gauge.. Does anyone recall BR moving locomotives and coaches by road??

    Remember when the River Ness bridge in Inverness collapsed in 1989. This cut of the lines to Kyle and the Far North isolating various items of stock. Some of this was moved out by road and I thinks other stock was brought in. Plenty of locos and stock for export was taken by road to the docks for a variety of reasons.

    Are we saying that Marples and Beeching were right?? Then was it not Serpell that wanted to cut even deeper!! Whether Mayor Khan is following those DMU movements or not he is certainly not hiding his concerns about the continuing air pollution in the metropolis and the efforts that must be made to mitigate same. On to Wareham via Purbeck's "Green Pathway"

    If a first-generation DMU is out of gauge at Brockenhurst, surely so would many other vehicles be. It seems more likely that it had merely not been gauged for that route after the installation of the cabinet, but why would a new cabinet have been installed close enough to the track for any stock to need to be gauged again?

    From Facebook I see 2 class 50s being overhauled at Eastleigh will be "run in" on the Swanage line, so will be interesting to see if they get there over the mainline or low loader?

    UK railtours do not seem to have any LU 4TC/33/73 tours for 2022, the 2019 Sunday trips to Swanage, via Wareham were sold out last time.
    They do have a trip to Okehampton in March with 2 50s which have already sold out.
