Tornado should fit. It last went round in I think 2010, but was due to do one this year that didn’t happen due to I think covid. 71000 also did a few in the early 2000s so that may also still fit.

A3’s and A4’s I guess, probably not. Bittern was booked for one, but it never happened.

Few years ago now, but when the Cumbrian Coast Express was steam hauled between Carnforth and Workington, the restriction north of Maryport was more to do with the coaching stock rather than the locomotive. These photographs were all taken at Dalston, which is between Carlisle and Maryport, note the absence of support coaches; they were ran along the wcml between Upperby and Carnforth separately. Photos taken: A4 1981, A3 1983, Princess 1991. 5-04. 4498 Dalston 14.07.jpg 32-00. 4472 Dalston 18.06.jpg 142-46 46203 Dalston 17 Aug 91806-Edit.jpg

I don't recall many engines having support coaches back in the early 80s

Not all, but some had, including 4498. NRM locos also had use of a POV. Although 91, 46203's support coach was definitely left at Carnforth and tripped to Upperby.

    I don't know why I bother.....

Thanks Shep, would have been nice for some exhaust coming off the Viaduct but was to warm for that.

According to RTT, Flying Scotsman’s trip to Skegness on Saturday is driver only operated:).

    • Pathed as Diesel locomotive, trailing load 715 tonnes
      Planned for 60mph max
    • Driver only operated

Not a bad path coming back. Less said about the outward the better though...

33 minutes Grantham to Peterborough seems pretty good. Stevenage to King's Cross in 48 minutes with two stops isn't bad either.

An hour from KGX to Stevenage is stretching a point, but guess that is what's available.

Please forgive the ignorance, but what is the significance of "Driver only operated" on RTT?

Non, it's an error similar to the "LNER operates service from here" on WCR charters passing through Leeds.

I assume the outbound water stop was Huntingdon Station rather than the usual Holme?
Grantham to KX is 105 miles plus it then gets hauled back to Southall. That seems a long way or is there a water stop I have missed?
I assume this trip needed a diesel on the back for the reversal at Sleaford.

You can take water from the down side car park at Huntingdon, and also from the up side one at Peterborough now the bay platform has been removed.

So maybe the 12 minutes at Peterborough (sure it was 9 minutes earlier today) is a splash and dash.
