Russia has a large amount of interesting and very huge(!) locomotives.
Of all their steam locomotive classes , the beautiful P36 is amongst my personal favourites!:)

Here's hoping that a few of those can be 'laundered' in lieu of political party donations into the UK. :)

    lovely.

they really were determined to use *all* the loading gauge weren't they?
Love the little rooflights on the cab - I wonder if they were of any practical use.

Here's a nice clip of Tim Littler's P36-0032 (since donated to the Russian Railway Museum) which hauled me from St Petersburg to Astrakhan rather too many years ago now.

Valve timing sounds right off with P36-0032. Impressive looking beast though.

Yes! But on the trip I did to Astrakhan she was not long out of the works and running well. Phil Girdlestone was on the train planning some improvements such as the Lempor exhaust which was fitted later. Probably the most interesting tour I have done.

I take the opportunity to share this great clip (not mine) recorded 5 years ago, it shows a lot of clouse up of a mighty blue P36 no. 0218.:)

I think I was on a trip, possibly with the LCGB (?). I had a fantastic time, and went back a couple of years later with a smaller tour operator (saw mostly trams, a different flavour)

Here's a typical Russian (well OK, Ukranian) picture:

    And now a technical question:

What is so wonderfully Russian/Ukranian about this P36 cabside view?

Something in this particular picture, that is probably quite usual in the Ukraine, but what I have not seen elsewhere.

    It's only a fun thing....

    The sausage?

I note the casual attire as well.

I did one trip to the Black Sea, where the driver was wearing only speedos and flip flops.

I did look for a repurposed mineral water bottle containing a clear liquid. (For degreasing, firelighting etc).
