Very interesting! I didn't know 5820 had a record for poor steaming (being barely out of short kex at the time I didn't know of these things!). It will certainly be interesting to witness its performances this time around, as I do remember it being just about the loudest thing on rails I'd ever heard, both in terms of its bark and its Nathan chime whistle.

Looking forward to venturing back up to the K&WVR to see Big Jim in action next year.

I noticed in recent photos on Facebook that Big Jim has modern electrification flashes fitted - is he likely to venture onto the mainline?

I think most Keighley engines have this because of the proximity to the electric wires on the mainline when they run-round at Keighley?

What would an S160 be limited to on the mainline? it would certainly make a racket going over the long drag with 12 on :) would it happen though because the engines must only just fit the loading gauge hight wise , that huge sand box might need to be cut down a bit, is the chernet valleys S160 still planned to go mainline?

So presumably, being a 'new' livery (ie, for the class) explains the use of modern yellow flashes rather than the earlier red designs?

German enthusiasts used to refer to the Turkish examples of S160 as 'Klapperschlangen' which means 'rattlesnakes' and I'm assuming that is a consequence of the noise they make when in motion at anything more than walking pace rather than referring to their US origin!

Should know soon when CVR's 6046 gains main-line certification !

I understand that is the owner's intention but L'il Bear seems to be better informed on the state of play with Churnet Valley traction so perhaps he can give some indication of timescales as, obviously, CVR needs will take priority in terms of locomotive utilisation.

Yes, I'm aware it's the owner's intention, but I wasn't aware it was just around the corner.

I didn't say it was "just around the corner" as I have no further knowledge other than it is intended to get 6046 certified for the main line.

Ok, you said 'soon', which made it sound imminent. There's nothing being said openly at the CVR, but I guess Greg is beavering away behind the scenes still.

Apologies for that ! Like most linesiders I await news from Greg / CVR once he is able to arrange the necessary tests.

Well in theory (9)5820 has already beaten it I believe, when the 'Yanks' filming was done at the Worth Valley I'm fairly certain it was taken to Shipley to turn on the triangle. Don't know if it was in steam but likely to have been towed by diesel like the 'Green Dragon' was when I had the privilege of being the owner's rep on its footplate for the journey during one of its filming jaunts over 40 years ago (think it was in Railway Children).

And regarding 5820 I have pictures of her (somewhere!) in the the UTC livery! :)

She ran to and from Shipley under her own power. There's a photo in a contemporary "Push and Pull" of her out on the main line.
