Oh dear! what did I start with my tongue in cheek comment saying 'Whos says there's no strategic reserve?' and a link to what I thought was an interesting film clip.

Hi back in the late 80s I use to deliver to AWRE Aldermaston on a regular basis and I can’t remember seeing any locos there.

Well they show the sites of all (except Torness and Trawsfynydd) the nuclear power stations in Britain on Google Earth in quite a good quality (i.e. you can make out the full railway system of Sellafield quite easily). Would have thought that they would have done all of the "sensitive" areas rather than just one, as Sellafield was, back in t'day, the daddy of Britain's nuclear capabilities. 8-[

Trawsfynydd and Torness are both shown, with their stored steam locos clearly visible.

So they are - they have updated it since I last checked then. \:D/

I remember that most of the section between Edinburgh and Berwick wasn't available in high resolution (pics taken from a very high altitude) so one couldn't follow the whole ECML.

Hmm, this is still the case with Google's mapping system, however Microsoft has photos taken from a much lower altitude to a higher quality.

I know this is an old thread but i didnt fancy getting shouted at for starting up a new one about the same subject but here goes anyway.

Last night i was reading a book (HAUNTED LIVERPOOL Volume 4 by TOM SLEMEN) when i get to page 142 and read the title of the story
(Stragetic Reserve). This guy usually writes about stories that have been told to him from other sources mostly creadible sources.

Anyway this story happened in 1977 with a guy called Tony Corbett who owned a scrapyard on Crown Street in Liverpool, he met an old man in a cafe whilst having lunch, who asked if he owned the scrapyard.
Well behind a pile of rusting doors was a solid metal gate which the old man picked and opened to reveal 4 flights of stairs down that lead onto an old disused platform which stood 3 old locomotives in pristeen condition. One of which was either an A3 or an A1 of which Tony instantly reconised, one of the others was a Turbomotive with LMS on the side.

The story goes that that tony tried to purchase the land to which government agents ended up turning up and sealing off the area......
    hmmm why i wonder??

Ive tried using goggle and bing maps to pinpoint a scrapyard but no look as yet but i have found an odd looking chimney in the middle of what looks like a playground.

I don't know what Tom Slemen is on , but it's certainly hallucinatory. We have to put up with his ramblings in the 'Liverpool Echo' every week. The only disused railway tunnels in the area have been well explored & only house a strategic reserve of shopping trolleys.
The vent shaft which is mentioned is in the middle of what was Crown Street goods yard & ventilated either the Crown St. station tunnel or Wapping tunnel.

    Ridiculous comment to make.

Hitler was never passed to drive those UK electric locomotive because his route knowledge only covered Kings Cross to York.
