Thank you and yes it was pretty close as a glance over my shoulder made me swear a couple of unprintable words I must admit .

That was motoring some at Shap summit on the return. Just shut off before it got to you. Couldn't hear the diesel working. Be interested to hear from on board about the climb up from Penrith. Did the diesel push and also shut down at the summit?

Nice, well filmed footage as usual Sergant.

BTW. Was that a golf ball I saw flying across in front of the loco in the first clip?

My GPS was on 63 at the summit after passing Penrith at 58 we were soon over 60 and did not drop below this until a check at Oxenholme. Diesel taking it's own weight only.

    Many thanks Ralph.

Sounds very good, must have been nice and noisy. But always a problem when the diesel is taking it's own weight. Never quite sure if it is pushing a little too.

Going well at Lancaster - there was a definite gap between the buffers of the last carriage and those of the 47 at this point.

Not sure about a golf ball as there is not a golf course there but a crow flew away so could have been that LOL . The Duchess could be heard and sadly did shut off but the diesel did seem to be just ticking over .

I was thinking about what happened, or rather didn't happen at the Open at St Andrews!

    Lovely noisy clips, thank you.

Re a gap between the buffers of the last carriage and a diesel. I find that quite good when the gap exceeds 50 miles or so! ;)

Bit of an overshoot at St Helens Central last night. Finished up under the road bridge about 100yds past the platform ends! Maybe it was the 11 coach length, or perhaps the tin can at the back wouldn't stop pushing!

If you are referring to the inbound to Liverpool I can assure you that it was not an 'overshoot'. When you have an 11 coach train and a 5 coach platform then the idea is to stop with the middle coach on the platform so that the majority of passengers do not have to walk through the train. I was on the doors of coach D and we were on OK. The same thing applied at Broad Green.

Diesels can't just take their own weght. It was sad to see exhaust vents on the 47 open so much of the day. Do WCRC really not think the Duchess could keep time with a 14/15 coach train. Wasn't that what they were actually built for?

Todays nwce was 20 early into bank q, shows how much of a hurry the diesel was in, always thought running early was nearly as bad as running late.

That is exactly what they were built for in the late 1930s onwards. But, sadly in 2015, compromise is inevitable. We know from a WC source that diesels are no longer part of the mix for fire risk related reasons but that just underlines the many other reasons why they are there.
