Swindons last locos

not sure where to post this, but bear with me

The Class 14 diesels (bear with me I said) ...froim what I can see there was some steam age technology used to build these (side rod lubriaction by oil pots with corks for instance),,,were there any parts similar or the same as ,say, on a 57XX pannier, given Swindons reputation for standardisation.....had a pipedream of converting one to steam.... :-#

 

Alternatively you may have just found a use for 5700s with worn out boilers (9629?) =D>

 

Always remember trip to OOC with 5051 and 92220 for an openday --- one of support crew went to Stores for something and came back very excited with the news that they still had some pannier rods at the back... #-o

With reference to 9629, things are looking good.... The frames have just been shotblasted, and had their first coats of paint. The rear frame area under the cab & bunker have been replaced, and new items, such as buffer beams, are also on-site.

The boiler for '29, although needing modification, is in suprisingly good shape, with an excellent firebox.

I think the next items on the shopping list are a new cab & bunker.

 

Would not surpirse me that some parts on the class 14 Diesels came from the steam age, but then again there a preseved diesel with the famous 'Bullied' wheels.

The last loco's to be built there just to be boring were meter gauge diesels for I think the Far East in the late 1970's

I don't know what was the last locomotive of all, although when the private engineering finished a couple of years ago it was Ivor the Engine!!!

 

0-6-0s. The type Swindon was best at building.

 

Thanks for the update. 9629 isn't an engine one hears much about. Best wishes with the restoration. Am i right in thinking that apart from the cannibalised 3612, 9629 is the only preserved 57xx pannier not to have yet steamed in preservation?

 

Yes, I think 9629 is the last one to be restored.... 3612 has given up several parts to other locomotives, but I believe the frames are now in pieces at Bridgnorth.

 

Where did the boiler for 9629 come from ?

Hello David,

We were fortunate to be offered a 'spare' boiler from Keighley & Worth Valley. They had bought it back in the late 60's/early 70's. The general concensus (at the time) was that it was too large to fit the frames of a pannier, although it was correct in all other major dimensions. We measured it up, and found it fully acceptable to fit 9629 (albeit with smokebox, and other mods). The K&WVR, bless them, accepted our offer, and allowed the boiler to be sold on.

As I said, the boiler appears to be in good condition, with a nearly new firebox. I can't remember the number, but I do know its stamped on there somewhere!

I seem to recall the remains of 3612 i.e. the frames and cylinders were sold to Llangollen for use with 7754.

 

The stays are pretty much on first fitting. An impromtu inspection by a visiting boiler inspector was very favourable. His impression was that the boiler had only been thro' its hydraulic exam, so no fire.

There is a number stamped on the box somewhere. I'll have a look next week, during our gala event.
