    They helped me yesterday, waiting at Tilehurst for 6024 & got a text around 18.30 saying it was 15 mins early. A minute or two later it was upon us! Didn't even have time to inform the other "watchers". I'm not surprised it was early though given it was allowed almost 1 hour for the 36 miles Padd to Reading. In latter steam days, 1963/4 steam used regularly run Padd to Reading in 40 minutes on the Worcester/Hereford trains & that was start to stop!

    You can now receive the latest update for the tours once you subscribe.

    Texts cost 12 as the original message.

    It is up to the user to enable / disable the status of this by visiting http://railtours.national-preservation.com/account.php
    and changing the status. Depending on what the user wants.

    If there has been no updates then you will still receive a text stating this.

    I am working on the notification updates for when you subscribe to a tour on-line.

    If every member just waited for text messages to arrive, no one will receive anything!

    Hmmmm, I just this minute received a text saying "Challow a19.19". Checking back, my last subscribed tour was The Bristolian on 28th August, which did indeed arrive at Challow at that time, though I never got the message on that day. I am not sure that the saying "better late than never" applies in this case

    Am I missing something?
    The way I read it is that members send updates for free but pay their own service provider, railtours live then "sell" this information to subscribers of a tour for a fee and make a profit on each update sent. Is there any sort of incentive for the people sending info to the service such as free updates or credit to their account? It all seems a bit one sided to me.

    At the moment, members sending in updates can win tickets for a rail tour of their choice, and also the latest hand held satnav.

    Unless I am mistaken most mobile phone providers now offer free texts, O2 certainly do on the pay as you go side that I use, and judging by adverts most others do in their various option bundles.

    Good to read that there are some incentives to sending in text. As to free texts, nothing is free you are paying for free texts in one way or another, be it line rental or top up. As for me I pay for every text as I have chosen unlimited data instead of texts, each to there own. I still feel its all a bit one sided in favour of RL.

    It costs me say 12p to send a text. Maybe I see a couple of tours a month, 24p to send in my updates. When I subscribe I can get the last update for the tour or maybe the first one that comes through and that could be all the updates I need for that particular tour. That's perhaps another 24p or 48p. So under a £1 really. If I'm standing in a muddy field in the dark waiting for the train and I get an update that sure is money well spent for me. If my 12p updates helps a few people down the line know what's going on well that sounds good to me.

    Having said that sent one update for 44932 on the return yesterday but had no updates for the return leg at all. Hope the update was useful for someone and maybe they will send in one next time that I will be able to use.

    I'd like to see the members goodwill rewarded by way of a credit to their account so they can receive some goodwill in return. I'm not suggesting send one get one free but something like every 5 sent gets you a free one just to say thank you.
