Thomas loco's

Does anyone know which Thomas the Tank engine has the highest water capacity?

 

the one with the biggest tanks I guess....

Without answering the original question,

you may like to consider also the rate of water consumption, some locos might use more water than others so if you are looking for a long operating range the tank capacity is not the only thing to look at.

 

obvisouly that would be a factor, but water consumption is obviously a variable, dependant on the work required, driving style, etc. So something that isn't quite so readily available as the tank capacity.

 

There are a few other considerations limitations too.
Some smaller locomotives intended for shunting sidings would have smaller bearing surfaces than a loco intended for branch line locomotive and may not be as suitable for long runs.
(USA tanks spring to mind for some reason?)

 

From memory, the active "Thomas" locomotives on the DOWT circuit these days are;

"Jessie" - Mike Pearce's Hunslet 0-6-0 (converted from a saddletank).
"Coventry No.1" - industrial 0-6-0T from Bucks Railway Centre
Converted Austerity (anyone know which one? I think it was "Barbara", but unsure) from the MHR
"The Lady Armadale" - Hunslet 0-6-0T from the Severn Valley
"Lord Roberts" - Nelson Reid 0-6-0T based at Bo'ness
47298 from Llangollen.

I believe "Gothenberg" at ELR was once a 'Thomas', and wasn't there one at Embsay, and at Middleton too? Quite a few of them out there!

Off-topic I know, but I wonder how many Percy's there are...?

 

i think water capacity would depend on how many fish are in Thomas's tank at any given time...

 

Just because there is a certain capacity if you can not fill the tank up with out risk it does not matter, and yes I do know of a Thomas where filling the tanks is not easy as there are no steps to get on top or anything to grab on to along the side to allow you to close the filler lid. I have even resorted to filling the tank and going in to the platform with the filler open so I can stand on the platform to close the filler.

 

Add to the above list Barclay 0-6-0T "Harlaxton" on the Caledonian Railway, Brechin.

 

There's also Hudswell Clarke No.1450, formerly named 'Dorothy' (bit of a gender issue going on here!) at Embsay.

 

Jessie can be removed from this list now. It is being converted back into a 'normal' loco at this very moment.

47298 will be the official thomas for Llangollen again. It is currently having it's boiler steam tested outside of the frames.

 

There's also a converted RSH saddle tank at the East Anglian Railway Museum, Penn Green no. 54

thats the one! aye the gender issue is most aparrent

 

I notice the Hunslets are listed as such, but the North British (Coventry No 1) as "industrial", North British did make quite few main line locos as well!

 

With the way HIT have effectively killed off the Days out with Thomas events I consider this debate somewhat academic really.
