It's not far from that. The "restored" Mosquito in NZ is almost entirely a new build as far as the airframe is concerned.

Hope you won't mind my pointing out, Steve, but there is/was a standard for riveted boilers.

The latest version I have a copy of is B.S. 931 of 1951, 'Loco-Type Multitubular Boilers Of Riveted Construction'. This incorporates amendments issued February 1960 (PD3693) and April 1961 (PD4158). It was first published in December 1936.

Interesting idea, I am sure there would be a prescence from 72010 Hengist project if it was possible to arrange something.

Ah! My apologies. I also forgot 82045 and the G5 projects, along with the Z Class Atlantic (that's supposed to be being built for the Olympics?)

    Any others...?

Don't forget the "smaller fry" such as "Thomas Wicksteed" or "Jack Lane" I believe there is some 2ft. gauge track at NRM which the could be demonstrated on.

not a bad idea at all. I don't think it would happen before NRM+ gets under way, but I will run it by the powers that be.

Question: is the Bloomer a new build? Parts of the frames (mostly the tender) are original. What does that make it?

Not at all. I did say that there was no standard for loco boilers, though, and I hope you don't mind me pointing out the final paragraph of section 1 of BS931 (Scope), which states that this standard '...does not apply to boilers for railway locomotives .............' (Which is a bit bizarre when you look at the title of the standard but it is essentially for traction engines and similar!)

    Touche!

Actually Steve, B.S. 2790 (welded boilers) has the same proviso!

    Touche, touched?

why talk of tubes? anyone with the with the correct tig certs can re-end flue tubes if they Know how to set them up ect to make sure they are in line. These are hardly the issue here, & im sure the A1 trust has more on its plate to worry about. good luck to them with this recon boiler when it returns, i do hope it works out for them. asap.
Ar also why would they need to remove the flues anyway?

It was OK for use on operations for a few months! As the NZ restoration is using original fittings, it is counted as a rebuild. If they had wanted to go the modern, more durable route, and replace the balsa/ply construction with modern composites, it would have been a new type and had all the associated hassle of certification.

The elephant? thats based on a wood carving!
Not 100% sure on this as I'm going on pictures on their website, but it looks to me like the G5s firebox is steel. Would that then be classed as a new design?

As long as it didn't include 'rebuilds' then it should not matter!!!

I'm intending to 'build' a website (with a lot of help from someone who knows how!) of all new builds and 'conversion' in the near future. Hopefully this will be a 'one-stop-shop' with links to all the relevant web-sites etc, with the permission of those responsible. Iain
