^^^ I'd have to say he's right. A boiler is pretty much a boiler from the point of view of how you look after it. Careful warm-ups and cool-downs, and a meticulous water treatment regime etc normally does the trick, so long as there are no intrinsic problems with the kettle itself.

Just out of interest I looked up the dictionary and both "thermal" and "thermic" are adjectives with a definition of "of or relating to heat." So going by the dictionary they are maybe interchangeable or maybe not.

If the alternative to spending £50k every couple of years is a new, differently designed firebox that would effectively require a different tube layout with all that would entail, which way would you go? I'm guessing but I suggest that these are the choices faced by the A1 team.

Facts, you want facts. They are out there. Suffice it to say that there have been improvements in lubrication systems, piston design and material specifications that have been tried with success. If however you choose to believe that nothing has improved in this area since the 1930s, that is up to you. If you further wish to believe that no improvements could have been made to the steam locomotive since that decade and that all trials and tests proving otherwise are figments of sundry and various overactive imaginations, you are free to believe that too.

The A1 Trust were provided with information that would have improved the design in many areas but they chose to apply very few of them. But perhaps they would have proved to be little more than 'smoke and mirrors', its a view that keeps some people engaged in this hobby very happy.

I wasn't simply referring to just the boilers there. Teething troubles in general. No, I don't expect many problems with Scotsman's firebox, but I do expect a few teething problems to surface when the engine is in steam.

    I'll let myself out.

    Lol

    [humour on]

I wonder what spanner rating of difficulty they've attached to the maintenance issues of welding in new sides to the firebox, four new corners to the foundation ring and replacing over 1,000 stays - all of which are apparently in line with what would be expected on a boiler of this type?

Perhaps they'll recommend this work is best left to a main agent?

Obviously the service interval for this sort of work will be every 300 steaming days + 100 ancillary days, or every 1950's heavy-general overall - which ever is sooner.

    [humour off]

While we're on more light hearted news, Tornado's cab is now in brunswick green and I think that the frames and wheels have been repainted, it was hard to tell.

Priceless - Is this for real ? Ironic or not it would actually be a good idea and possibly a good seller, though perhaps Mr Riley could do one on Black 5's which would also be very popular...and there enough footage on the earlier ' you tube' item to do a pretty good one for a jubilee

    Good point.

I guess a fully welded boiler would be considered to be just a single component, any problems with it and you'll need to follow the instructions in the manual on how to take it out and install the new replacement. ...contains no user serviceable parts

Mmm, probably drop a level or two on the 'spanner rating' in that case!

Just had The Tornado Telegraph delivered by email, and not with growing concern that nothing is being operated or starting from York, Newcastle etc.. If they want me to contribute further to the new repairs, do us a favour and get it up here.

Its not just me who is starting to notice the reticence of the trust to start from here, and it is stark contrast to what we were told whilst she was being built. Where has The Talisman gone as an example????

I'd tend to agree. I know they have to chase the money, but the endless London starts do grate somewhat. The only chance we get is if she works up the WCML and picks up near Nuneaton.

Forgive me gents, but isn't it more to do with the deal done with Steam Dreams, and what trains they operate?

In which case somebody wants to get their thinking cap on, as a good proportion of covenantors signed up in the North East on the understanding that main line tours would be available with her.

These same people have now got No access to a mainline trip behind her.

The closest for this year was a proposed NELPG trip departing york, going via durham, newcastle, carlisle to edinburgh, then back down the ECML to york. The trip is currently postponed as the date for it was early May 2011, it may happen later in the year.
If the NELPG see the merits of a trip, why cant the A1 trust????
