There's also the matter of stresses within the stays, both thermal and mechanical, is there not? It's a very complex piece of engineering...

Won't a longer stay also have a greater elastic limit ?

The direct stresses will be no different, whatever the length but the longer the stay, the lower the bending stresses created (for the same relative movement). It is the fluctuation in stress level that is signigicant in fatigue failure.
Not too certain about the decision to fit hollow stays. The direct stresses will be higher even if the bending stresses are reduced by the revised design. Without full detailed info, it is impossible to calculate, though.

Do all steam locomotives need an out of frames as I seemn to see it a lot with preserved locomotives but because Tornado is a new build does it not have to go through this. Hope the steam test went well.

It has already had an out of frames steam test in Germany.

O levels? Bring 'em back, never did me any harm. Nor did A levels where 45% = E Grade, not A as it does now!

Nice one...........the logs that we know today, however, are a simplified version of the original, devised by a local chap called Henry Briggs with the agreement of Napier

Interesting that.....it got me digging a bit........the founders of D Napier & Sons, taken over by EE in the late forties, were Scottish. Napier of logarithm fame was actually a Scottish mathematician........seems too much of a coincidence to me. Anyhow back to Tornado....its amazing what these boiler stays have generated....

The tender is back in the paint shop devoid of lining for some reason. Either that or Flying Scotsman is going into BR green with a non-corridor tender!
