I've updated the photo's comments. I resisted the temptation to ramble on about the dark arts of locomotve servicing

Maybe not the right place for this, but it does relate to Tornado!

During 60163's visit to the NYMR, various the photocharters will take place. Places are still available on some of them. The loco will be used on the Teak Set, Blood and Custard set and goods train during the course of these on different occasions. Bookings are via John Hunt - if you don't have his contact details, please PM mean and I will pass on to John via e-mail.

Just realised how much Tonado looks like Blue Peter (60532)

Can someone tell me the differences between the two?

    Thanks.

The main difference is the wheels which on Tornado are 6ft 8 and on the A2s they are 6ft 2. I believe there is also a slight difference in the size of the smokebox but otherwise its same the diagram bolier, grate size etc. Interestingly enough tractive effort wise its claimed that the A1 has 37,397lbs and the A2 has 40,430 lbs.

Regarding tractive effort (starting tractive effort remember, see the thread on that very subject); it's the size of the wheels that makes the difference.

They are going to look a lot more similar too. BP is being repainted into BR Apple Green for the Barrow Hill gala.

Yeah definately the wheels that make the difference and i have read the thread about tractive effort. Not overly reliable as a figure, i was just using it in context of differences rather what an actual loco can do. I have seen picks of BP already, looking good, be nice to see her looking smart again.

I read the article on tractive effort as well, I guess if i'm understanding it correctly..

the A1 has a stronger starting ability (does this translate into weight of train / acceleration ?), but at speed maybe slower than an A2, but can haul more ?

How did this translate into practical use ? In service were A1 and A2 used for differing purposes ?

Other way round techincally A2 should be better at starting a train becuase of the slightly smaller wheels although with only a 6 inch difference! The interesting bit would have been if either an A1 or A2 had made it onto the Rugby or Swindon testing plant. Putting each through a set route and see whether the wheel size difference acually made any difference in the driving or peformance of the respective engines.

A bit of a shame this isn't post overhaul, just looking at these pictures show jsut how similar the A1 and A2 is.

I've heard, from a usually well-informed source, that Tornado may do an extra trip on Sat 25th April, perhaps from Kings Cross to Edinburgh. Possibly something to do with the BBC? Can anyone enlighten us?

Possibily because Steam Railway said that Tornado would appear in a popular TV programme for airing in the Autumn. No details as to what though.

Funny that, Ive heard too that its a fund raiser and I think the tv programme is a follow up to absolutely chuffed which was shown earlier in the year.
