Turkish 8Fs

According to the Beano, at least two of these may be on their way back soon - I'm surprised that there hasn't been any discussion about them on here! Interestingly, it says there has been interest from the NYMR and no-one there seems to know anything about it! Does anyone know who other possible bidders might be?

 

Im suprised its been so quiet too - perhaps someone should drop Ed Ellis a line (Iowa Interstate, owners of Weardale/Dartmoor) as they did something similar with a couple of chinese QJ's.

i dont think that a couple of totally clapped out 8F's are in the same category as brand new QJ's. Presumably these 8F's would yield some spres, but are total restoration cases arent they?

 

If they are in a similar state to what Vera Lynn came back from Greece in, then yes.

As said above, have heard nothing on the Moors grapevine, so I suspect the magazine may have been a little creative.

 

I don't suppose they be any worse than a Barry restoration, and perhaps a bit better if they are complete. Perhaps someone from Steam Railway could enlighten us about the alleged interest?

Somewhere out there is a Stanier tender stuffed full of spares and gallons of sweat. A team went out from Butterley and was a signiture away from an 8F and spares, damn signitures ](*,)

 

Comment on another forum suggests a name for the person behind a possible move to repatriate Turkish 8Fs, and if true is certainly someone with the necessary credentials. Sorry not naming names here yet.
They are clapped out, but essentially complete, and there is a spare set of frames languishing at Llangollen once the "Patriot" people have had what they want.

Must be a good case for utilising the "best bits" to build one or two good ones?

Interesting what the poster above says about "spares" in Turkey as well.

A question of wait and see.

As reported elsewhere the patriot lads are only getting the pony truck wheel now. But the 8F is no longer in the head shunt just out side of Llan station and is up at the shed.

Its the bit at the end (...of the article linked above) about the Churchill 8F Group that is interesting though, that ties to some extent with some other comments seen.

What makes you think the QJ's are brand new ? just because they were built up till the late 80's doesn't mean they were not flogged for 10-15 years in China first, granted these not as clapped out and long in the tooth as the 8F's but a loco half way through it's average working life is not new.

As for the 8F's as said earlier they are probably not any worse than what's left of the Barry Wrecks, most loco's of class 8 power that are the right side of a million quid are already spoken for.

 

Um.. I think they actually were brand new, the last off the production line. One of the Chinese steam building plants was terminated by an earthquake round about 2000, but the other kept going until quite recently.

 

exactly,,the two shipped to the US were brand new built to order I believe.

According to this Pdf file, "The two locomotives, class QJ 2-10-2's No. 6988 and 7081 were built in 1985 and 1986, respectively, by China's Datong Locomotive Works."

The QJs are ex Daban and no new steam engines were built after the late 90s - a stock SY was delivered with 1999 plates to Tiefa.

Good luck to the 8F project - proper engines with proper history!

If you look hard enough, there is a clue elsewhere on the internet about the remaining "available" 8Fs in Turkey.

I hesitate to repeat it all here, because those involved may prefer the subject to remain quiet for a while so that matters progress away from the glare of publicity.
