This is probably a very simple question to answer, and more to the point this post probably isn't what you wanted to read haha, but how would one go about cleaning the smoke box and brushing out the tubes on the Garrets? With the water tanks and tenders, surely this becomes a difficult job?

Not difficult at all, as there are no Garrets at the WHR.
However, cleaning out a Garratt might be tricky... :)

I had a feeling I'd spelt it wrong, as such is the attitude of a man working in a sales job, could not be doing with checking without posting. Business is nothing with out complacency!

There's a saying knocking about that goes 'I'm not just a hat rack' I.e. the person's head is not just there as a hat rack, but the person is rather quite clever. I was playing upon this saying, but not to worry, I was just being complimentary to the designers/rebuilders :)

We do not clean the tubes out all that often do to the locos size and the fact they work so hard the cinders keep the tubes scoured. During inspections and maintenance pressure lances are available to avoid taking the back of the tanks, and it is just as easy to remove the whole so that is what is usually done it it is that serious. The smokeboxes and spark arrestors are cleaned out and inspected daily

The tanks are pretty easily removable as well. It's quite interesting to see the 'face' of a Garratt without the front tank!

I can imagine! Personally, I think they're beautiful things... A Garratt with out the thanks would be a mighty sight :) Any pictures anyone?

You're a gentleman sir, I imagine they'd have a nice profile without the front tank on, a bit imposing and more powerful looking perhaps!

    Oh yes!

On that subject, it was nice to see the drawing of one with a modified tender, on the wall behind Mr Lewin's desk, in the BBC Doc that Andrew posted the link to on the other thread!

    One day . . . . . . .

I've been a fan of the NG15s since I first saw one somewhere back in the mists of the internet. Once they're up and running I think I'll have to get a season ticket :D

Anyone else think they have something of a 3' Irish look to them?

    Thanks Andrew,

Is that not modified with a cab back mounted on the tender?? Or is that original?

I have seen somewhere an image of one with a Vanderbilt too! Something a little different.
