Err, yes just a tad!.................................. all a bit confused dot com if you asked me.......................... I've heard of pass the parcel, but pass the tender??????????????????

Still when she double heads with 34007 it'll be like looking at an all green Battenburg cake, a sight and sound I'm very much looking forward to seeing! :)

The Southern's got form when it comes to tender-swapping. A load of flat-sided bogie tenders were swapped from S15s to LNs during the 1920s, and it became a sort of pass the parcel with N15 tenders as some of them were fitted with six-wheel tenders for use on the Central (Brighton) section due to shorter turntables. Many of the preserved Bulleid tenders are ex-MN types, and several are paired with 'Light Pacifics', namely 34039, 34067, 34101 and 34105. What would be interesting to the rivet counter is a list of surviving original (ie. not new-build, although replacement tanks are allowed!) 'Light Pacific' tenders. I suppose we could start with 34016, 34023, 34051, 34081 and 34092 having original examples. 34007, 34027, 34028, 34046, 34053, 34059, 34070 and 34072 have/will have new-build tenders, and 34010, 34058 and 34073 have yet to see another tender. Any suggestions for modification would be welcome.

And don't even start to try to map the 3500 / 4000 gallon tender swaps between the various classes of moguls and the Schools and Qs. Or which ones in preservation are ex-snowploughs. Or why the preserved Q class has the tender handbrake on the driver's side. Or the complex series of swaps of 13ft wheelbase and 14ft wheelbase and double bogie tenders between T9s and Black Motors and Drummond and Urie 4-6-0s. Or the LBSCR C2x running with an LSWR tender...

    :)

I think the tank was a different origin from the underframe!

Yes, and probably an SECR smokebox door and buffers as well. By the beginning of the war, many SR pre-grouping locos were pretty eclectic mixtures of whatever parts happened to be around - a consequence of most available capital going into electrification projects.

    But back to Braunton :focus:

I see that Braunton has been replaced on the DCE on 28th Aug by 45231. According to Icons Of Steam, her next outing will be the DCE on 4th Sept followed by a TBX on 8th Sept. Does anyone know why these changes have been made? Teething troubles? Crew availability? Hopefully, nothing major.

If 34046 is working London-Weymouth on 4th Sept and back on 11th, that would allow the possibility of spending the intervening week somewhere interesting in Dorset, and here is my totally uniformed speculation:- In the thread about the Swanage gala, http://www.national-preservation.com/threads/swanage-steam-gala-2013.39491/page-2 there was talk of a possible additional visitor. 34046 would even be facing in the preferred direction for large tender engines on the Swanage Railway. I may be putting two and two together and making five, but it would be good if this was the reason for 34046 working the DCE on these particular dates. Even allowing for the presence of an identical engine, 34028, I am sure that if 34046 was to turn up, it would prove a popular addition to the line-up. Anyway, we shall see.

I was only joking, Nick! All I really want to do this Saturday is discuss the condition of Bewdley's SKP Ale whilst soaking up the atmosphere. Anyway, back to 34046...

What was the mechanical defect that prevented Braunton running on the Christmas Sussex Belle?

From Braunton Facebook page :Unfortunately, contary to our announcement earlier, The Christmas Sussex Belle will not be running with No. 34046 - 'Braunton' next week.. Unfortunately an issue arose with the locomotive that could not be resolved in time for the rail tour, rest assured No. 34046 - 'Braunton' will be back soon.
