I'm assuming but I would imagine that spares for the damaged parts are not in stock and will probably need to be specially made. Heritage railway points tend to be site specific rather than standard turnouts that Network Rail will try to design layouts around (and frequently find it not possible). Also, this will be a bullhead rail point whereas these days flat bottom is normal and I can see why the replacement will take a while. Similar things happen even on the national network - one of the Birmingham to Kidderminster services (the one from New Street) was suspended for months a few years back awaiting commonents to repair a damaged point.

Speculation it may well be but there is much evidence in the photo to support it.

Presumably that translates as only one loop being used at Hampton Loade and trains retimed not to cross there ?.

Obviously. The points have been replaced with plain line. The loop is now a siding.

Ah yes, the Smethwick Galton Junction freight train derailment. Can't remember if it was a track or wagon problem but it was closed for about 3 months due to the point having to be specially made abroad - don't we make them in this country anymore?

Apparently not, I was told on a SVR train today, that the replacement is coming from China.

Don't heritage railways make use of spare parts suppliers around the country? 1 near Doncaster another at Eastleigh for a start.
At least 4 advertise in "Infrastructure" Trade mag

Presumably they will also have called around the other heritage lines to see if they have the parts on hand?

If you look at the pictures, it seems the tender is the only part of the train that jumped the points. The engine and the immediately following coach are all still on the track.

Maybe we should look at the tender and not the track for the cause..... Could a faulty spring on the tender leading axel cause this type of derailment?

The tender derailed on plain line. It was already off the road when it reached the points and caused further damage. When everything has been examined, conclusions will be reached and results made public. Speculation is pointless.

Exactly. We will know when we know. Speculation is not only pointless, it can also be dangerous.

With the closure of Corus Workington no rail is rolled in the UK anymore.

Isn't rail still being rolled at Scunthorpe? Still see trains coming from there with rail on them!

I thought that the rail plant had been moved to Scunthorpe, too.

Thanks for posting that little bit of information. It answers a lot of questions in my own mind and the whole thing now starts to make sense. I certainly couldn't work out how the tender could have done the damage that it did to the track if it had simply split the switches.

Talking to some friends today discussions are being held to get a replacement tender for 43106 sothat it can operate at xmas. It looks like it might be easter before 43106's tender is reunited with the rest of the loco
