There is a case for my fathers old saying " you do a job do it right" .
I remember seeing Leander for the first time after her restoration, she was coming up the 1 in 80 towards Colwall tunnel, no steam leaks anywhere.

Before anyone starts I had been involved in road engine restoration in the 60's the condition engines were found in had to be seen to be believed.

We even had to take a bow saw to a Sentinel near Kidderminster to extract it from the undergrowth'

So perhaps the critics of David Smith ought to go a bit easier on him when they have been lying derilect for so long it becomes a hell of a big job.

Still it is great to see Galatea back in action again well done everyone at Carnforth.

    Cheers Dave

Right I do not want to get into a livery debate but is the red on the most recent trip out looking a bit more than undercoat?

I think you'll find that 'Carbonise' is the word you are looking for, it would only burn when it is open to atmosphere like in the smokebox.
The point I am making is that when the first few steaming cycles take place, the mixture of water, steam and cylinder oil (which doesn't burn) in a cold cylinder, mixed with the paper, makes a sticky mixture that is known to get between cylinder tap spindles and bores holding them off the faces and the fact that this was only the first and second outing on the mainline and probably the first two occasions the cylinders got to working temperature and subjected to Dry steam, by which time the paper & oil mixture had already done its work.
I trust this will clarify the matter

I think that Mr. Smith will be putting the green paint on after the loaded test runs.

Looks to me like WCRC diesel livery (it's a bit hard to tell the exact shade from YouTube videos), applied rapidly, to keep the rain out until everything mechanical is "just-so". Then, when there's time, she'll be rubbed down, prepared properly, and the final livery applied. If the mechanicals are still giving trouble as the first paying train approaches, don't be surprised if the painting has to wait. ;-)

In 50 years time, will enthusiasts be trying to recreate this exact shade and repeat these early test runs?

Shame they didn't have time to add the logo on the tender:

5972 has ran with a sort of West Coast emblem/markings, when the Hogwarts ones were a no no on certain runs presumably for copyright, speaking of which, is there any green left for Olton after 45699 now Potter filming and marketing has ceased ?.

Agree, if that's a permanent top coat, then it's certainly not one of the better jobs.

Back to 45699, the news of a 3rd pending test run is encouraging.

If it does happen I might be able to see it somewhere between Clitheroe and Preston as I'm pretty busy earlier on.

Yes. The point of a loaded test run is not just to check out the loco, but to satisfy Nework Rail that it is fit to run on the national network.

Galatea is not visible at Carnforth tonight (Sun), so test run Mon looks unlikely,
