Mention of 45562 "Alberta" tempts me to wonder if Mr Smith might just turn out 45699 as 45562? You never know. "Alberta", like 60014 "Silver Link" is a loco that really should have entered preservation, given its exploits in 1966/7. Maybe at that point its overall condition was against it.

I totally agree with THE MELTER above, with a Jubilee its that lovely double-three music it makes when working hard. Bring it on, whatever the livery!

Know what you mean about the Jubilee sound, never sure if it is double three or triple two. I grew up with the Bushbury Jubulees and was always fascinated by their sound, they approach you they sound one way and as they pass there is a subtle but noticeable change in the sound.

I would love to see a Jubilee or Scot and a Black 5 over the South Devon banks, be nice to hear some Stanier 3 cylinder music down there.

I stand to be corrected but I don't think either a Jubilee or a Scot has been down there since preservation and a Scot only in the 1948 trials.

    Cheers Dave

The Patriot project website says the front rods were off Patriot 5546 and orginally fitted to Galatea, which is how I remember it. Creating the new Royal British Legion Endorsed National Memorial Engine

The rods from 5699 were acquired from Barry by the Maunsell Loco Society for S15 847 with the intention of modifying them to fit, but when they realised 5699 had been sold to Bill Ford at the GCR they were handed over to him. Steve Pilcher the society teasurer verified at the time that two of the rods were from a Patriot.

Certainly better than any Barry wreck! At least it was complete & in working order, however worn out.

Wasn't Alberta overlooked because of the state of her tyres? I'm pretty certain I've read something to that effect.

Just to clarify, I don't particularly care one way or the other regarding the stripe, either. That's assuming the protective layer of solvent-based liquid that hardens to form a glossy finish turns out to be BR green...

Everyone seems to be getting excited about 45699, yet again, but has there actually been a sighting, boiler test, outside appearance since 2010 ?
i'd assume an out of frame boiler test will be the first clue, followed by the site of a crane lifting the boiler in later...then a few more outside appearances over the next few months before a test run.

Despite carnforths secrecy, generally someone sees smoke rising at carnforth as prelude to a fire, noelist usually being being the eagle eyed one who spots it.
if Galatea was going to rollout in September, I guess it should be showing up outside by now ?

maybe James may come on here and reset our expectations once more, the last definitive clue from the coal face was months ago, that said both jubilees will be ready around the same time, probably 2013.

Has anyone seen it or just got excited about a tag line in steam railway relating to 35018 ?

I've said it before & I will say it again, I wish Carnforth would be more public spirited about their "achievements". Not only do they not announce anything, it seems to be a hanging offence if anything does get out. Almost all other preservation organisations are proud to publicise what is going on with various projects. They are thought more highly of because of it.

However much you say it, Mr Smith will not change. We all know it will appear when it's ready, meaning they don't have deadlines to work to or miss.

Was talking to a guy down at carnforth station a few weeks ago. He said he saw the boiler lifted into the frames the day before. Also at the same time the boiler of British India lines was lifted out.

First can i apologise to the moderators for causing agreement to break out on this forum.
Secondly, i have got more chance of seeing Galatea running than winning the lottery and yet i still buy a ticket! even though the odds of me getting home alive are shorter than winning the blessed thing, the odds of me seeing Galatea up and running and pretty good and that will do me, and when it is done what will i say to the Mr Smith that has restored it with his own money? that is simple for me, it will be THANK YOU.

There is a quote Re: 35018 from James Shuttleworth in the latest Steam Railway - " You know the script. We'll tell everyone what we're going to do once we've done it"

It wouldn't be authentic. Primarily because 45562 was a vertical throatplate engine, whereas 45699 has a sloping throatplate. There are other detail differences. Smokebox saddles and front bogies varied as well.
