Has anyone got any insight into what adjustments had to be made to Galatea to turn her into the formidable machine she now is? Jubilees had a reputation for being fickle steamers, so I'm guessing the fettling focussed on the valve settings and steam circuit - but that's just me making assumptions.

I think, though I could be wrong, alot of the issues with jubilees steaming was due to the short firebox boiler some had, later jubilees having I think a longer box. I could be wrong though.

When it was fickle one of the Carnforth fireman said that the steaming capability went up and down like a yo-yo. I was later told that the blast pipe and various alignment matters were looked at. The important thing is that there was a problem and judging by the later performance it was fixed. This was, after all, a bags of bits that they reassembled and this must be one of the most remarkable rebuilds of recent times.

I could be remembering this wrong but I recall Chris Beet saying something about when things ‘furred up’ in the front end it improved, that was in the piece about 5690 in Steam Railway a few years ago.
Happy to be proven wrong as ever.

The first time I encountered Galatea was on a visit to Carnforth, when I wasn't aware that Galatea had even survived the cutting torch. A totally unexpected discovery.

Here is my son (aged 44 in a couple of months) examining a hole in Galatea that day in July 1986. 37-Alan-looking-through-a-hole-in-45699-Galatea,-Carnforth,-29-July-1986-copy2-fbook.jpg

Who would have thought that she would have been such a star 40 years later.

She was really transformed by the adjustments. I was very impressed with her performance on my first run with her as she took charge of the RTC End of Southern Steam special in 2016. Passengers were treated to some excellent running on this trip along with a glorious soundtrack such as this which I recorded as 45699 roared along the line between Laverstock Jct and Basingstoke.

Out of interest, does anyone have a date when it derailed at Barry and the wheels cut? I was there the following weekend. The wheels had already been sliced but the engine was still on the floor and leaning over at a steep angle. There was a prop supporting the low side and a cable for the dome to the adjacent track to prevent the list increasing. I remember looking at it and thinking; Well, that will never run again. So much for predictions!

I'd just be interested to know when it was.
