This may be rubbish, I read it elsewhere, and what I read was that the loco was pulling forward to take on water. The Stove R and the tender corridor connections were not supposed to be connected at all, but the adaptor clips had for some reason (either not being stowed properly, or through vehicle movement) become attached to the tender connection.

Thus the crew, having not attached the corridor connectors, did not realise the two vehicles had become intertwined, leading to what you see in the video.

This could be conjecture, I have not verified the source.

I think that was my conjecture - see post 737 -but you are right, it is just conjecture on my part.

If youve ever put gangways together the clips and the adapter clips dont just flop over and connect. The gangway on the stove R should be hooked back which would prevent the gangways connecting in anyway.

That was my recollection (many years since I've even looked at one). Don't the clips turn back through 180 degrees to avoid accidental contact anyway?

Yes they do. They have a retaining link as well.

No, that incident would not be reportable under any of the RAIB schedules.

Thanks for clarifying. I initially thought it would be as there was a potential for serious injury from flying objects but, on later reading the reporting requirement, realised it probably wasn’t.

They didn't hang about getting this fit for service again! Quick phone shot taken today at Bury.
I've also been told today by a couple of ELR volunteers that No. 9 will now be running every day until the 30th, and not just the 26th and 27th as advertised.

I don't seem to be able to access your photo

My understanding as a footplateman at the ELR is that 34092 is intended to be in traffic from Saturday for the remaining operating days of 2019.

How about now? I've adjusted the permissions. Forgive me - I'm not used to uploading photos directly to Nat Pres!

Have they also mended the gangway connection on the van? Or is that well down the priorities?

Thank goodness for that. No.9 has had such a bad run of luck recently. <BJ>

Repairing the BGZ will take alot longer.
Sadly its not just put a replacement gangway on and away it goes. The structure behind the gangway will need looking at as well as the tunnel.

Quite so, wooden bodied vehicles usually come off worst. The attached is one of the signs we put on the NRM's LMS Third Open 7828 at Peak Rail where it is normally coupled to a MK1 restuarant car with Pullman gangways.

The photo shows the retaining pin that stops the clip flopping over and connecting.

The problem will be bolts will have been stretched and possibly pulled through the framework. Other gangway components bent and or broken.

Given the K4 and A4's Scottish pedigrees (K4 designed for the West Highland line specifically and the A4 being initially the pride of London-Edinburgh expresses before their Scottish swansong), the SRPS museum would not be an inappropriate home for them, if they were to retire to static display.
