Any idea if/when 4464's plaques will be fitted. She doesn't seem to have them at the moment looking at her LE move yesterday but are meant to have been fitted before the Great Goodbye at the end of the month.

It is not just the thermal cycling of the boiler that presents concerns. When considering wear due to use you have to consider lubrication conditions. The Babbitt protects the journal from damage should there be metal to metal contact. The bearings you are dealing with are not made from self lubricating materials so they require lubricants to be delivered to them. What you would like to achieve is full film conditions where all the load is taken by the film of lubricant. You can achieve this by means of pumping the lubricant to the bearing at such a pressure that it prevents metal to metal contact. This is the hydrostatic system. The hydrodynamic system maintains the oil film by means of the rotation of the journal. Hydrostatic systems become hydrodynamic when the rotational speed is high enough. So, does the engine you are dealing with maintain a high enough oil pressure to the bearings when it is stationary? When does it develop a full film? Now go beyond bearings and think of valve and piston lubrication.
So what is worse for a locomotive? Fast running with full film conditions and some chance of hydrodynamic on valves and pistons or slow running where it is seldom that either ever happens?

Thanet is an unusual place to send a loco.

I wonder what they have in mind for her?

LSL have the old Hornby factory and she is going there, along with over time up to 30 pieces of stock - is it rail connected as its suggested she is moving by road, moving that much stock is going to take an age....

I am pretty sure this site used to be rail connected in the past; I wonder if we will see it re-connected?

Agreed - it isn't just a case of re-laying the rails, it's the resignalling too plus all the associated costings for safety cases etc.

Up until about 1929 I believe, before the new line was built via Broadstairs was built and the old line pulled up.

I'm disappointed if this means 60019 will not be overhauled in the near future. Would certainly be top priority in my book.

In spite of my user name, an A4 over a Merchant any day. With 60009 soon to be retired, that will leave 60007 to fly the A4 flag on its own. 4464’s return can’t come too soon.

And demolishing the houses that are now in the way.... The factory lies close to the old Margate-Ramsgate direct line. However, the line closed in the 20's, and the Hornby site dates from no earlier than the 50's. There may have been a rail link to there before, but not in it's present guise. There is no prospect of the site being rail connected, even in the long term.

She will be overhaul in due course but with the people at Crewe working on Blue Peter, Nunney Castle and Britannia at at the moment. There is not much room or enough workers to start on her and the it is good for the public is able to view her before she has her turn.

A news item posted on IoS Faceache page yesterday says the following:
"Further to Locomotive Storage Limited’s purchase of the former Hornby site at Westwood, Margate in late February 2017, we are now thrilled to announce that that our A4 Class Pacific locomotive, 4464 Bittern, will arrive in Thanet on 2nd June 2018 for storage and eventual public display whilst it awaits its turn in the overhaul queue at our Crewe Depot."

"Since the purchase, the main warehouse has undergone extensive engineering works to prepare for the arrival of the first railway vehicles. Seven railway tracks have been laid in the warehouse, with access loading docks to facilitate the unloading and loading of locomotives and carriages. It is expected that up to 30 items of rolling stock will eventually be housed there."

So she will steam again eventually.
Mr Hosking has certainly built up an impressive collection if it doesn't all fit in at Crewe.
