    Re: 60103 @ York tonight

I managed to make it over to Malton for a brief glimpse of her in the rain. I've added a description of my video before the link so you don't expect too much.

This is just a brief glimpse of new-build 60163 Tornado on the outward leg of her night-time light engine test run (York - Scarborough and return) trundling through Malton Station on Tuesday 4th November 2008.
She had stopped just round the corner (out of sight) from the station for a check around to see all was well. Then trundled quietly through the station before gently opening up. I've let the video run on at the end to hear her quietly accelerating away and hear a short whistle.

Interesting to see all the flash photography, in the dark, even after the station announcements. #-o

Freudian slip by jack when starting this topic, how many years before 60103 is out on test I wonder..... nice video though.

Quite amazing that the station staff have the time to nip into the office and find the "flash photography is not permitted" announcement, when they could be doing other more useful stuff "interfacing with customers"....

..At least they didn't shut down the station due to "smoke hazard"... :-k

    Hmmmm...

While i may agree in part with your sentiment, the rule against flash photography is in the guildeines produced by Network Rail and been flashed at isnt good for drivers of trains on other lines...

And just a guess, but if NX didnt roster more staff to look after these "enthusiasts" last night - im sure they will be paying out the overtime on the next 2 tests. It will reward them with little extra profit...

    Re: 60103 @ York tonight

I guess from a safety point of view it is right that flash is not permitted, but the risk is less at somewhere like York where everything is moving relatively slowly, and there is a fair degree of background lighting. I can totally see the reasoning when flash is used on an otherwise "dark" station, with trains of whatever kind passing through at line speed.

This engine is impressive even in grey undercoat. Will be even more so when it emerges fully liveried.

    Re: 60103 @ York tonight

I noticed the thing about flash photography when i was filming the footage last night, i lost count at how many times they announced it, i was there for about an hour and it was on numerous times, but yet people still went ahead and did it.
There were a few of the security guys walking around whilst i was there, informing the still photographers that flashing is banned, and if you've watched the video which someone kindly posted for me :D the last sequence of 60163 heading for Scarborough they are announcing it and someone just goes and flashes, well it made me chuckle.

    Re: 60103 @ York tonight

I have noticed that some modern cheeper cameras just seem to flash regardless. Either that or Mr Inoread Instruction knows what to do about it. I have been flashed whilst working on the footplate, several times in bright sunlight.

I would imagine that a station like York probably has signals all over the place either to allow permissive working on the platforms or to split the platforms up into different signal sections. Even a driver approaching a signal slowly can SPAD it and a SPAD is a SPAD at 5mph or at 125mph albeit with probably differerent circumstances.

Yet another example of the irresponsible spoiling it for everyone.
As long as I get my shot, sod anyone else.

More ammunition for NR to ban steam on the mainline.

    Re: 60103 @ York tonight

Bringing the flash photography thing back up, Sorry guys only just remembered, i was at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway the other week (29th Oct) and i was walking up through Darnholm and i knew 75029 was due on a down movement and it was dark was getting on for 5pm, and i got to Bridge 29 (The Arch bridge at Darnholm) and i heard 75029 so i moved to one side and carried out all the procedures, and all of a sudden when it came around the corner there was this hugeeee bright light, and it blinded me and i couldn't see if the driver had given me an arm signal back because of the stars in my eyes, was quite glad i was stood where i was though, i was bang in his photograph, so would have spoilt his photograph, but he managed to put my safety in danger in my opinion, then when the train had passed i carried on walking up the bank, and no wonder there was such a bright light, i must have counted about 6 Tripods with Flood lights on the top, i waited for a while to ask to see his lineside permit as he had one of the flood lights on the trackside, but no-one seemed to be about, but there was someone doing this at the KWVR at their Autumn Gala and they weren't wearing their permit, so i was wondering if it was the same gentleman. Well i'm assuming these rules still apply in this instance, because he could have blinded the driver preventing them from seeing me, and me seeing them.
