242A1 is correct. Chimney height is critical in a well-engineered system, and all UK designs are compromised to some extent by our restricted loading gauge.

What about the County 4-6-0's double chimneys? They were really squat from the outset.

I don't know if its an optical elusion, but 6023's 'lowered' single chimney appears to be shorter than 6024's 'lowered' double chimney. Overall loco height (probably the same for each) can be influenced by other factors.

I've read someone said it is lower than 6024, reason being 6023 is on full thickness tyres and 6024 usually runs on the thinnest they can get away with.

How is 6024's overhaul going? That is while we are on the subject of GWR kings.

Last I heard, new slimmed down cylinders were being cast, and that was mid May the day after the AGM!

So I assume as its all quiet, things are progressing well.........

Bit late for that: AIUI BR scrapped them 60 years ago without even taking them out of the boxes they were delivered in.

Has there been a forecast as to when the components will be reunited and reassembly commencing?

No, but 6024 Preservation Society Members are regularly updated in the Societies Quarterly Magazine, and if you become a member you will be kept up to date.

I had to hold back my comment for a couple of months, but the case of 6023 proves otherwise isn't it? As discussed in my PhD thesis the tests by Ell prove that chimney length to diameter ratios of below 2 have inferior performance and eventually the chimney stops functioning. The poor steaming of the Clans and the poorly functioning single chimney/orifice test for the MN class are proof of the point. Chimney length is not only important, it is essential!
    Kind regards
