    Quick question

Will K4 61994 ''The Great Marquess'' be staying at the ELR over Christmas & New Year, or will it be returning back North to Thornton Jn

    Cheers

Booked to take part in the ELR BR steam weekend in late January, so I guess it is staying at the ELR.

Is there any reason why she can't be a regular on the Fort William - Mallaig run in the summer? Surely that's where she really belongs.

Surely it depends on whether West Coast Railways want it? K1 62005 seems to be pretty well a permanent fixture there, and I would expect 44932 to be the other loco once it is available, to keep the work in house. If they ever get another Black 5 equivalent (42859?) then the K1 might lose its place for the same reason.

It would also depend on availabilty of support crew. I remember hearing that there is only a small team for 61994 & 60009.

I think you want to be thinking a little further north for the K4s summer adventures if the rumours are to be believed. Since 932 is being fitted out for the cambrians i cant see her being used in Scotland as well.

What loco is being fitted for the Cambrians? What's 932?

I was under the impression that 44871 was earmarked for the Cambrian services - it would make more sense for 44932 to go to Scotland as the season there is longer.

44932 West coasts own black five, not far off being ready. Why wouldnt West coast seek to have another loco capable of running the Cambrian service. Anyway back to the K4 one of the main operational reasons for it not being on the Jacobite is that it dosnt have a hopper ashpan and there is no pit to dipose of it conventionally. I am sure there will be other reasons 2.

The Heritage Railway Article by David Wilcock about the false floor for 44871, stated that 44932 would get the same treatment, and would be the standby loco.

I think as well the lack of Pit for servicing a three cylinder engine is a further drawback

I understand that there is a pit in the EWS shed. I imagine this could be used for servicing if required. However, I dont think EWS would be keen on it being used to empty ash into.

Yes there is a pit in the shed, and I wouldn't be surprised if they do empty ash in to the pit, I seem to remember it has drainage in it so it can be cleared out by conventional methods ( e.g shovels and wheelbarrow ), and then washed down afterwards.

The K4 worked the Mallaig Extension for a couple of weeks back in 1994(?) so they must have serviced it somewhere.

Whatever the perceived problems, I understand that the K4 is indeed the probable replacement for K1 62005.

On a Yahoo group of which I am a member, one of the K4 support crew said it was off to Fort Bill on Thursday and would stay until 20th August.
