I know she fits round the Cumbrian Coast, which is normally a pretty good sign of wide ranging route availability.....

The problem these days seems to be that just because it used to fit, there is no guarantee that Network Rail will agree (or even know?) if it still fits...

Does anybody have an idea about the timescale for 71000 to be operational again? I'm interested in how long it might be before the relaunched Tyseley set-up might have her available for outings.

Fantastic news, can't wait to have the Duke back in action as she's been dormant for way too long now.

Out of curiosity which parts of 71000 have been re-engineered? The owners did say they were tweaking a few bits to make her more reliable & perform better. Also does she still have her american chime whistle fitted? Always sounded fab with that on.

Without ploughing through several issues of the newsletter I'm not certain, but I think the only parts that are being tweaked are the exhaust cams, everything else being refurbished or replaced like-for-like. If you're keen to have the Duke back in action, join the Trust and add your support: https://www.theduke.uk.com/support/membership/

Luke, I believe that the cylinder lubrication is to be changed to give more direct/ less atomised feed. The piston and rods are being renewed, but by a more conventional method of manufacture ( cant remember the ins and outs but the originals were unusual) - this in response to short piston ring life/ cylinder liner wear common with the larger standards.
Apart form the cams mentioned I don't recall much else.

New front cylinder covers are also being made. These are to accommodate the the nuts/lock nuts on the conventional piston/piston rod set mentioned by yourself.

Rear cylinder covers with a slide bar 'anchoring point' are not being made... ( not yet anyway ).

Gorgeous loco & can't wait to see the duke back out n about again, i'll certainly be on a few of her tours. Was magic when she was based at bury for a few years, drew the enthusiasts in their droves, I could be completely wrong here but is 71000 bigger than usual for a pacific?

She always seemed rather chunky even from platform level, loved her with that chime whistle she had on for a while, do hope she keeps it.

Just my perception when I first saw it then it looked bigger. Fab loco & was lucky to survive by the sounds of things.

Since with the existing exhaust, the boiler could produce more power than the wheels could transmit to the rails, probably not a lot.

Indeed, potential improvements in efficiency maybe..... The Duke looks chunky because the Boiler diameter is maxed out but the length is short / wheel base is compacted - so she is a tad shorter than other Class 8 Pacifics....

Well, the double chimney had 4 7/16 in orifices, the 6245 Kylchap fitted had two of 5 1/2 in diameter which is only 50% more in area! Tiny detail?
    Kind regards
    Jos

I would expect it did. However Powell writes "Little is known of the performance of this application, but the Motive Power Department
complained that the cowls above the blastpipes seriously interfered with tube cleaning, and it was not persevered with"
    Kind regards
