i would imagine the loss of storage at Southall is an issue, but not the whole problem, it could have just as easy been transfered to private starage else were or even relocated to Swanage, i'm assuming this was not a possibility, so a decision was made to sell , this can be down to several reasons, maybe lack of people or facilities to overhaul the engine, or the MHR made him an offer he just couldnt refuse, your stuck with an engine you can't restore because you dont have the facilities, or maybe the manpower or are not allowed to carry out further work ? then the market just might not be there now, if as i suspect West Coast are pulling up sticks and concentrating on its northern base. So a decision to sell up may have been behind it, so assuming JB now has a pocket full of cash, is he going to put it into the Mogols, or into 34073?

Was this the loco which had a new cylinder a few years back? If it was I wonder if there was some ongoing claim/counterclaim about what caused the failure and who paid for the repair. Absolutely no clue and could be well wide of the mark but if so this would be a good way of sorting it out.

would the cost of the replacement cylinder have been met from the Railways insurers? TRW12 Is right, some people are possibly reading into this something that isnt there, the facts are that the engine is now, or shortly will be owned by the MHR, and thats returning to MHR metals. anything else is past history time to move on, JB has decided for what ever reason that the engine will be better in someone elses hands, so theres not really anything more to say .

Now getting back to the Engine its self, does anyone know when its coming back, and by what means, can an engine be put onto a transporter at Southall or can it be towed by rail ? assuming the removed bits are put back on and the engine made save to travel .

    Hello Mods,

We seem to be running two threads about the same loco now. Any chance you could merge this thread and the Mid Hants Railway operational matters together please.

    Cheers

Actually in this case I dont see why they should be merged..... this is a discussion about 73096 with alot of prior history; the other thread is about the MHR.... they just happen to similar discussions at the moment.

Not so sure... if you have a Std.5 in ex works condition its operation value is say '100' if I have a Std.5 in need of a overhaul its operation value is say '50' and if the next chap had a ex Barry Std.5 its value say '25'... they all have a 'operational value' its just some are more that others.

My take is that the MHR and Mr Bunch have some outstanding 'issues' with each other and in a way to drop all matters to each parties long term sanity Mr Bunch has agreed to sell 73096 at a price that the MHR will happily pay. This exchange will close all the difficulties and issues from the past.

That is to say a asset has been sold at a discount to a party which in the past has been legal conflict with the owner, I for one cannot see this as a easy pill to swallow if I were the owner.

Anyway I hope that this closed that era and I wish nothing but the best for Mr Bunch and the MHR; and I hope that this sale assists the overhaul and mail line running of 34016.

I'm afraid I don't understand your logic there OldChap. It sounds to me like the MHR have paid what the value would be if it were in operational condition.

Agreed, the threads are ultimately about different subjects, but sometimes there is crossover which is inevitable, as in this case.

So why would the sale of 73096 assist in the overhaul/ restoration of 34016 or 34073 as some suggest?

Well i guess that depends on ownership of said engines, it could well be that there are other pressing reasons that dictated the sale for instance, i asssume 34067 is being overhauled,, If he is still a part owner, Mr Bunch may very well have outstanding invoices from WC , but the truth is we will never know for sure .

One could also speculate that JB may want a bit of financial security for himself and his family going forward. The sale of 73096 would help that. None of us are getting any younger after all.

But if that was the case he could have sold it on the open market for it's current value. In normal circumstances, the Mid Hants would be the last people he'd want to sell it to.

However the fact is that he has sold it to the Mid Hants, and they have apparently paid way over the odds for it by paying what it would be worth in working order.

The explanation offered by Gav106 in post number 94 is the only one that makes sense.

The only answer to that is that Mr Bunch has done well to get such a good price then, if the MHR have as you say , paid over the odds they would have had a very good reason for doing it, i don't think its to do with a condition of the agreement that tied his engines to the MHR, its got to be something else, possibly over the damaged cylinder ? and liability ? the part may have been changed and engine repaired, but did it create another clause in the agreement ? and to buy the loco and the liability was the only way out, that to me sounds more a likily problem, than any other.

When i was at the Mid Hants gala back in early july i was chatting to a friend who is a volunteer there and he told me that the MHR had to pay for the overhaul of the standard as it was in the contract that it had to be overhauled to running condition. He mentioned that it was not going down well at all with the railway as it meant they were going to have to fundraise/spend money on something that would gain them nothing and with it going to JB there is obviously a bit of bad blood.

So to me it seems that maybe the railway has managed to get around that by giving him the price of the loco meaning that while its an expensive payment at least the railway does get something back from the whole deal. And this may be a better deal for JB as it gives him the cash to either spend himself if he needs to or spend on the remaining locos. The Swanage moguls (im hoping) will see the money and all get the mainline equipment for the Wareham services. Now that would be nice

I've witnessed this kind of deal before, while some may find it hard to understand the reasons why this kind of transaction happens, let's just say it saves a fortune in legal costs.
