73096

Don't they get loads of people mid-week though? I've heard there were so many coming on Wednesdays that they've now split and some come Tuesdays or Thursdays instead.

 

Will there be any impact longer term for 850 and 925? Not sure if MHR itself funds the care?

 

I believe that may be the case, it might impact on 850 as i understand agreement has been made for that engine to be overhauled, much depends on the costs that again will have to be raised , is it under the care of the Eastleigh railway preservation society, or the MHR? it may well be that the steaming fees may already have covered some of the cost. it depends on what engine has , or can raise the funds to support its overhaul , as ever the most expensive bit is the boiler work .

 

Eastleigh Railway Preservation Society are no longer involved in the care or maintenance of 850.
As good as it is to see 73096 back in Hampshire, it may delay the boiler of 828 entering Ropley boiler shop.

is it not a case of 73096 returning as a means to escape a ticklish legal situation and it's overhaul may not be a priority?

 

Could 73096 jump 34007 in the overhaul queue given that 34105 is going to be in steam in the next few years?

However long it takes at least its back home and eventually we'll see back over the Alps once again.

 

It depends on what is needed to get another ten year ticket, and on raising the finance, if the money is not forthcoming for 73096 it wont be steaming any time soon, the most likliest option i can see is that once the bottom end of 75079 is done and the boiler is lifted, the people who have done the bottom end on that could once 73096 has had its boiler lifted can then have its bottom end done, bogie out, bearings checked etc but it will have to wait for 506's boiler to be done, and 35005's to free up space then depending on whats needed, both standard boilers can be progressed side by side , isnt 34007 being overhauled off the railway?

Isn’t a more likely answer that in due course, the relevant director(s) of the MHR will set out their plans for the loco via one or the other of the MHR’s formal communication channels?

i agree, and the Standard Tank needs fitting in somewhere. All in all the MHR will have a great Standard selection, very representative of the last days of the Southern and also the S&D....

Probably they can have more than they can afford to maintain. It's also the case that they can have too few also, relying on paying hire fees.

Happily the MHR is in a good position now with their own locos and three long-term affiliated groups providing locos plus the NRM locos.

Happily the bad old days of in effect being dependent on one owner are past, the MHRPS are probably the largest owner of engines on the railway but they are hardly likely to up sticks and take loco's away, Yes there might very well be more engines than can be kept in service at any one time, but it means that they do have engines that are suitable for the long term health of the line, as all are more than capable of hauling any train the railway may wish to operate, 80150, 75079, 34058 , these are engines that will one day get restored, ok 75079, will be before 80150, or 34058 but the thing is , in the meanwhile the verious groups can raise money towards their eventual restoration, Some engines may leap frog others, for instance if 73096 is found to be in good condition boilerwise, and the bottom end needs next to no work, who's to say it shouldnt be tackled before say 80150? or what ever is next, it may cast a question mark on 850, rather than on any other loco, because thats the next one due to enter overhaul , but what if the standard is a quicker job?

Yes.

I think, just as the response from Swanage regarding the T3 was "give us a moment it has only just arrived", the same applies here.

A key problem is dry storage, and we will have to find a solution to that somehow. Land is the problem, and to a greater extent than almost anyone else we lack that commodity.

 

If their out of service locomotives are sitting in a headshunt rotting away then, I submit, yes.
