Interesting really. Not challenging opinion at all, but personally I've always found the standards being less aesthetically pleasing to what their pre-grouping equivalent would be (Standard tank vs a Fairburn or Stanier tank, or a Standard 5 to a Black 5 for example).

You think an Ivatt 4 is more aesthetically pleasing than a standard 4 mogul?

Though I agree a Black 5 is a much better looking locomotive than a Std 5.

Agreed on that one! I was thinking Stanier mogul I guess!! But you are right the Ivatt 4 would be the Standard 4 mogul's LM predecessor.

Of the Standards, I think the best looking were the Britannias, class 4 4-6-0s, with the small tender, the class 2 2-6-0 and the class 4 tanks

    From the Takeover Code:

    • When a person or group acquires interests in shares carrying 30% or more of the voting rights of a company, they must make a cash offer to all other shareholders at the highest price paid in the 12 months before the offer was announced (30% of the voting rights of a company is treated by the Code as the level at which effective control is obtained).
    • When interests in shares carrying 10% or more of the voting rights of a class have been acquired by an offeror (i.e. a bidder) in the offer period and the previous 12 months, the offer must include a cash alternative for all shareholders of that class at the highest price paid by the offeror in that period. Further, if an offeror acquires for cash any interest in shares during the offer period, a cash alternative must be made available at that price at least.

I would doubt if the Takeover Code applies in this case - it is basically for Companies quoted on a Stock Market and appears to be potentially applicable to Private Companies in effect if they used to be a PLC.

Would it be wrong for me to say I would have preferred they had cut up a few of the Merchant Navies instead?

Look at all those Churchward moguls. With all the recent discussion about suitable motive power for heritage lines, if only we could arrange time travel to 1959.

That would be a perfectly rational opinion - given the actual needs of heritage lines.

it can't be wrong to express an opinion. I'd say the locos were cut years before they had MNs to work on. Not so many years though when you think of it, what if Dai had had a reason to stop cutting just a few years earlier! I wonder whether that might mean some of the locos would still be there and might include some of the MNs.

5422 survived to 1965 as did two 1366 class.... tragic

So as far as a future home for 76084, the NNR, NYMR or ELR would seem the most likely?

I'm sure that the NYMR and ELR would both like it, but I don't think it will end up at either unless a benefactor steps in. I think the NNR is most likely - they seem to have funds and have the need for it - it would be far more versatile and economical than either of their two previous purchases. Who knows, though, a line like the WSR might also fancy it? Wherever it ends up, though, I think a provisional deal is already on the table.

Id like it up at the Moors. Its a very nice bit of kit, but if based there hopefully should give a certain engine with an "American" wheelbase type less to do (but I can dream...).

Probably a good reason for the NYMR to show an interest (if they did- who knows?) having interchangeability between similar machines is surely a good thing for availability/spares and crew familiarity?
