As a by-the-by, which other preserved ex BR loco(s) have flangeless driving wheels, other that 9F's? I can think of one...... (The preserved Riddles 2-10-0's aren't ex BR so don't count.)

That's the one I'm thinking of. I don't know of any more. There are several industrials with flangeless wheels, though.

3rd pair of driving wheels on the Super D are, indeed, flangeless.

I don't recall the Super D ever having gone main line? Not even on the Whitby trains.

Don't forget that the last 9F in BR service ended its days running as a 2-8-2!!

Im sure I read that it was being considered at one point as Pete Waterman had a spare TPWS kit at the time (during restoration) but it was felt that the 40 mph limit would be too restrictive for it's use except for perhaps the Ffestiniog branch. The equipment was later fitted to 5553 which itself has never been used on the mainline!

i thought it was planned to take it mainline so if they were going to allow the super D why not a 9F

Where could the Super D have been sensibly used on the main line? I wouldn't have thought it would have been allowed a very high top speed. When the Q6 was discussed as a possible Esk Valley engine I've a feeling it was said that its top speed would be only in the order of 35mph, and I couldn't see the Super D being any faster.

I think Pete Waterman has mentioned it once or twice, saying something along the lines of it being considered during overhaul but quickly discounted when they found out how rough riding they were, even at low speeds.

Not a sensible option for the main line, but it would have been great to see it belting up the 1 in 29 bank off the Ribble branch in Preston, as many of the class did until the early 60s... =P~

I find it wryly amusing that, when the Supe D first came back into traffic, there were many requests for it to go to various lines. It now seems to be permanently on the NYMR. Having driven it this last week, I can understand why no one wants it! As for it running on the main line, common sense must prevail!

I wonder why anyone would want to restrict it to 35 mph. They go a lot quicker than that, and they did use them on passenger trains at times.

Only in dire emergency! And even then, only if they could find where the crew was hiding!

That's not true. I remember them on weekend excursions to Southend. They aren't the most comfortable of engines, but they go all right.

Abergavenny's Super Ds were used regularly on summer excursions down the Sirhowy Valley line then across to Barry Island.

The super D is definitely capable of comfortably achieving 35mph, well comfortable for passengers-can't speak for the crew! Please don't ask me where or how I know this...i've only ever been behind it at 25mph(!) :-#
