Don't like to question but have you any proof what it came off?

If you've got a chime whistle off an A4 and know which loco it is off you are probably looking at £2500 to £3000 at auction.

But my point is, I have a Stanier whistle/hooter, now if I said and could prove it was from say Duchess of Abercorn then it would have much greater value than one off a Black 5.

In theory, if you can prove the provenance of a whistle then it should fetch more at auction. However, the price you would get is also dependent on the number of people interested in acquiring it.

A good point Ralph - from polishing chime whistles on the Talyllyn (we supposedly have 1 from an A4 and 1 from a Britannia) it's hard to spot any real differences between the two (if there are any at all). How does the owner know its from an A4 and not a Brit?

IIRC, the ex A4 one is from Sparrow Hawk and was fitted to No.6. Don't know which Brit the other one came off. As you say, not easy to tell apart, if at all.

    Hi all

Thank you for the replies. It came off Sir Nigel, taken of in Crewe for the preservationing :) and was damaged (dropped) before being put back on. So naturally, they took the one off Miles Beaver and swapped it. Seeing as Miles was donatings good parts before the cutters touch loomed :(

And It feel straight in the hands of a little train spotting huligan who now a little old, puts it on my roller for a good blast (its our smallest and quietest whistle though! lol!

Hi Stan, will PM and catch up proper! Good to hear she nolong out in the field :)

    Cheers!

A4s and Brits both have Crosby chimes, so there is no guarantee such a whistle is off either class.

Really? BR Std chimes have always sounded different to A4 ones, to me (I think!?)

Also, which of the A4s had whistles donated by a railway native to the country after which said A4 was named?

There is a difference between an A4 chime whistle and that off a BR "Britannia", "Clan" or Standard 5 4-6-0. I have a Doncaster drawing of a BR one, and compared with measurements taken from the whistle on 60011 in the Darlington works scrap yard in May 1964 there are variations.

I always thought the A4 chime whistles were slightly smaller than a BR Standard type.
