    Surely the aims are simple...

To try and retain the true industrial pedigree of the locomotives, which made and kept the industrial revolution going!

Like the idea of the awards though...

What about the "Wing and a Prayer / Bodgit" award for the loco most optomistically (and successfully) kept in service despite obviouse signs of the "newness" having worn off!!!
(The finalists so far would be Singapore (RRM) and Robert Heath No 6 (Foxfield) ... oh and Wimblebury (Foxfield)... oops soory did I really say that!!! [-X ) - I'm sure there are others...??

    Or...

    The Wing(ed)nut award...

    [attachment=0:31imxulq]wingnut.gif[/attachment:31imxulq]

... for locomotives which have managed to throw their own components out the chimney... don't look so shocked... I can think of several who'd be up for this one!!!!

You've forgotten to mention the Beyer Peacock, there's an engine that has kept going when it shouldn't have! Mind you we have had some wonderfully interesting locos, not least of which was Borrows well tank 'The King' which had a cracked cylinder when it came as a guest one year!

Does throwing pits of it's own chimney actually count then?

My nomination for this award, the Zimbabwe railways Garratt that we were behind last year. A support for the piston rod guide broke at 40mph. The damage included, bent piston rod, bent connecting rod and one or two other minor items. Bodge, remove bent bits, disconnect reverser to that cylinder and jam in middle gear then continue as 3 cylinder at the same speed as before for another 90 miles.... Time lost, less than 90 minutes. Oh and it was at night so the only lighting was a couple of battery torches which soon ran out, then burning oily rags tied onto bits of green sticks from a nearby tree.

How about something like a Welcome/Good to see back award.

For engines that have been used as that anoying blue engine and have had been changed back in current boiler cert.

Ah, you'd have to make it wider. You would have to include engines like Gervase that were absolute no hopers, but are coming back at speed!!!!

That's a classic 'get you home' repair that used to be a standard question for drivers exams. Take down the affected components, secure that side in mid gear and continue on the remaining cylinders. Nearest I've come to it was taking down the front (bent) coupling rods on Dame Vera Lynn and continuing as a 2-2-8-0 but I had help from the shed staff as I didn't have the necessary tools on the loco!

Definition of a TRUE Industrial loco!

    Built by a private company.

Owned and operated all it's life by a private companies.

    No mainline history.

Only ever carried non mainline liveries.

So therefore, doesn't that make Tornado one.....

Honory membership for this loco! Welcome Aboard!!
