    The image shows a Bagnall locomotive. According to the caption it is at Maesteg Deep but that colliery closed well before WWll. does anyone know anything about it?

    Though the colliery closed around 1935, it was retained for pumping purposes and therefore may have retained the need for a loco? Alternatively it may have had something to do with the Maesteg Washery which was built in 1957.

    The loco is a Bagnall which went onto Duffryn Rhondda Colliery in the nearby Afan valley. It wasn't a success at Maesteg because the trailing wheels derailed, not unexpected. The Maesteg Deep refers to the loco shed, not the colliery in this case, as it served three collieries and the central washery. If you get back copies of Railway Bylines for June and July 2008 there is a comprehensive article and photos on the system in there.

    According to the Plateway Press book Bagnall Locomotives, this loco is 2587 of 1938 built as an instructional loco for Longmoor Camp and named Kitchener. Sold in 1948 to Appleby Frodingham, Scunthorpe and then moved to NCB South Wales soon after initially to Garw Colliery then Maesteg and finally Duffryn Rhondda before being scrapped in 1967.
