My best picture of worlds best looking locomotive is this:

taken by me at Koenigstein last spring.
My favourite railway is HarzquerBahn were You sometimes can see four very modern and powerfull locomotives on one station

    http://www.hsb-wr.de/mehr-erkunden/webcams/kamera-drei-annen-hohne/

I have been over Shap a couple of times on buisness.
For steam over Shap I have to watch Youtube and somehow there are far to many cars on motorway, overhead wires over rails and fast non steam trains.
The most tempting steam tourist line is, as far as Youtube can guide me, over Aisgill.
The most suitable locomotive will have to be made to suit and this have been my lousy job.
    Demands

Do not disturb track and loading gauge
Best coal economy before being forbidden
    Powerfull and ligth
Max speed 75 miles per hour.

I have to make a couple of adjustment to my sketches but if someone wants to see them please tell me.

image.jpg image.jpg I'd have to nominate either one of these as best in show in the Express Passenger category. Although this puts me in a quandary? Where do I put 60532 Blue Peter? Such a sexy beast!

Was tempted to say "Sammy the Shunter" but that would be too sarcastic!

Sorry Hermod but this sort of thing is much like saying what type of beer one prefers or which football team is supported. It bedevils U.K. railway enthusiasm.

    With more apologies,

It is funny to see how threads evolve.
I have made a fool of myself and my hidden agenda was to show that british CMEs vere over-paid and -honoured .
But the pictures are awfully nice.

Not at all, the opportunity for discussion is always welcomed. Perhaps it might also highlight some of the lesser known designers who successfully developed export designs, in many cases much more advanced than the domestic products.

That is an oddly attractive locomotive.

In this regard, two names come to mind but there will be more.

Firstly David A. Hendrie, who was pupil to David Jones on the Highland Railway and is supposed to have much to do with the design of the "Big Goods" 4-6-0. Later he became eminent in South Africa where, despite the 3ft. 6ins. gauge, he produced magnificent 4-8-2s and the like, which dwarfed their U.K. contemporaries.

Secondly, H.M. Le Fleming who was also a pupil but of Charles Collett at Swindon. Later went to Malaya where the metre gauge did not inhibit him from designing a really up to the minute 4-6-2 with three cylinders and poppet valves which was repeated postwar. Somehow one does not envisage something of this kind getting much encouragement back in Wiltshire!

Although run down towards their end of their career in 1978, the 59th class Garratts in East Africa were really impressive.
(Built by Beyer Peacock in Gorton Manchester 1955/1956.) They proved the old adage that if it looks right is probably is right.
