Am surprised that Mr Rolt didn't get a mention on the forum on the 100th Anniversary of his birth ...

Local paper gave him a write-up:

    Hi,
ok then well here goes! Yesterday on the Talyllyn Railway 100 years to the day of his birth we ran a special train for the Inland Waterways, the Sports Car Club as well as a host of other movements LTC Rolt was involved in. The Loco hauling the train was No.4 Edward Thomas with No.2 Dolgoch and No.7 Tom Rolt stood at Wharf to see the departure off under the Bridge, for obvious reasons No.7 was the only engine in steam!! just prior to the departure Sonia Rolt opened a new attraction in the NGRM about Tom and his life which will be open for the whole of 2010 so catch it while you can!! upon the trains return to Tywyn Wharf a slap up buffet was put on by the Talyllyn's Catering force which concluded the first in a number of special events going on on the TR this year.

I remember the late Robin Butterall pointing out the house LTC Rolt was born in (Eaton Road, Handbridge, Chester) not far from the college I used to go to.

I can't rememberthe number but it is quite a distinctive house.

Go along Eaton Road northwards from the college towards the tee junction with Overleigh Road. On the right handside there is a road called Percy Road. Immediately after this junction on the right hand side is a large brick house. This has two gable ends (one with mock-tudor beams), a bay window and a front door facing you. I understand this is the house.

Might be worth checking the 1911 census, to confirm (p.s his full name was Lionel Thomas Caswall Rolt)

A full report of the event (because the TR were kind enough to invite me!) and a restrospective on Rolt will be in the net issue of Narrow Gauge World out at the end of the month.

    Cheers
