What is the bore and stroke of the 12N-710G3B engines as fitted in these locos? The only source I have found quotes 645 mm bore and 710 mm stroke (25.39" x 27.95"), which bearing in mind that the Sulzer engines as used in Class 47s are only around 11" bore and 14" stroke appears incredible. As the accepted maximum piston speed for Diesel engines is around 2000 feet per minute I find something like double that for the Class 66 dimensions to be beyond belief. Anyone know?

Thanks for that, rather more sensible figures. Was wondering how they got cylinders of over 25" bore within the loco body shell, let alone in the cylinder block/crankcase!

11.6 litres PER CYLINDER is pretty impressive.

Thinking of putting one of these engines in your Jag, Victor? Might have to beef up the suspension a bit.

Have found how Wikipedia got it wrong. They took the bore and stroke in millimetres, but put them down as being inches after shifting the decimal point one position to the left.
