A couple of years ago I enjoyed a fantastic main line trip behind 'A4' Union of South Africa. I understand this loco is now under overhaul at Crewe; does anyone know what's being done and how long it's going to take?

It's having a full general overhaul, and I was told by someone who should know that the contract was for it to be completed relatively quickly - I think the person concerned said a year, but it was a while ago that I spoke to him and I can't now be sure of what was said. The gist of the conversation was that John Cameron didn't want the overhaul to take years, though.

60009 is inside the HC (along with 70000), so I assume it's being worked on.

As of 2 weeks ago (when i last saw it) the loco has been stripped completely ie cladding, boiler, brakes, cab, motion, wheels, tender all in pieces.

Cladding supports are back on the loco to allow work on them

Frames in the process of being needle gunned, boiler being worked on

In HR today it states that late summer/early autumn will be the return date. The loco will remain in brunswick green, which will be quite interesting having three running A4s in different liveries.

John Cameron purchased the loco from BR and still owns it.

This has set me wondering just who has now owned an ex BR loco for the longest continuous period, National collection and the various railways exempted, that is. JC and 60009 must be a contender, along with the A4 Loco Soc and 60007, along with the original NELPG pair of 63395 & 65894. The other early purchases (60103, 61994 & 68846) have all changed hands. Also note that they are all ex LNER!

When did JC buy 60009 - was it '66? Most ex-LMS/BR types bought direct from BR seem to have come after or around August 1968.

David shepherd must be up there with 92203, I believe both 75029 and 92203 were also purchased in 1967? Or how about 6201 (1963???)

I was looking for individuals or groups, rather than railways, as the Bluebell (and Middleton with 68153) are going to be a long way ahead. 46201 is a good bet, though as has been suggested.

He must have been a very young man at the time if it was 45 years ago. Thats some ongoing commitment on his behalf and a credit to the steam Heritage scene in general.

7029 Clun Castle has been in the ownership of its trust at Tyseley since January 1966, And has now been owned by tys more than 3 times longer than by British railways!

The Scottish Locomotive Preservation Trust Fund purchased 828 (57566) from BR in 1963.
