According to http://www.uksteam.info/tours/trs11.htm 70000 & 70013 are double heading Bristol to Penzance next April 23rd.
Did Brits ever double head a train when working on British Railways?

Yes, although probably not down the GWML to Cornwall.

I travelled behind 70024+70025 on a diverted Sunday South Wales-Paddington train via Gloucester and Stroud when the Severn Tunnel was closed. The pilot engine 70024 worked from Cardiff as far as Swindon, and would probably have returned piloting a westbound service with a Castle or Britannia. Two Britannias was apparently not all that unusual on these heavy Sunday trains via Sapperton, although other combinations of Hall, Castle and Britannia were more common.

Yes, some tests with fitted freight mineral wagons were carried out in the mid-1950s, I think on the Midland main line and the locos concerned were 70043/44, Someone will be able to quote chapter and verse you may be sure of that.
