I'd thought it was time this got a dedicated thread; I went there yesterday for their monthly open day and was very impressed.

Still early days for that place, but the stuff they do have there is amazing; I'd never known about the AM9/309s before myself.

There are lots of important EMUs at the site. Some questions.

    1. Is there a long term plan to get them under cover.

    2. How long a tenancy do they have/is the site long term?

    3. Do they plan to have any sort of electrified running line?

    4. Any news about the 4-Sub please.

You'd have to ask them directly; mind you I doubt an electrified running line is likely to happen at all.

I read their brochure and the very first thing that smacked me in the eye was the number of the front of the SUB is not in the correct place.

Network SouthEast repainted 4732 into a version of SR green. The number was below "Southern" thus is is i believe preserved in NSE mock SR livery rarther than a normal inservice livery of the 1960s.

The 4 sub is owned by the suburban electric railway association. http://www.emus.co.uk/who.htm
The unit is currently not being restored as other sets have priority. The condition of the 4 sub can be seen at this page (the page is ten years old) http://www.emus.co.uk/subr.htm The worst coach is the open trailer which has no interior and isn't watertight, while the other coaches are in a better condition and have been made watertight.

In which case, you probably need to moan at Chris Green or whoever was in charge of the paint job.

I don't think so. It has an allover yellow end in the photo, in it's last days in service it had a green top to the end with Southern on it.

I must confess that I rather think we should rejoice that it still exists, and throw a few pounds in the direction of ERM so they can put it towards the unit and the numbering can be got right in the future...

I do agree....I'm a bit of a Southern Electric fan on the quiet, (don't tell anyone...I am in therapy). I didn't really mean to be criticising, sorry , it's just that the numbering system was so...what? Iconic? (is that the right word) and was so b***ered about with latterly that things jar with me (like including "3CIG" in a topic heading....).

Oh aye, totally understand, but from what I know of the ERM team, it will be made right one day. In the mean time, they need all the support that they can get, either in time, money or people.

I think this collection is one of the most deserving for a meaty grant to shove up a Havenstreet Train Story style building and get all these items inside so they can restore them one by one without the work being undone so quickly.

Looking at my photo, I suspect that's just a 'holding' paint job and it would be sorted with a full fix.

The future of the whole museum collection looks in doubt sadly.
