If we were redoing the names today, Jane Austen and possibly George Eliot would be there in the 70030-5 series.

Probably in today's world there might be less emphasis on military and more on science, in which case people like Marie Stopes and Rosalind Franklin would come into the picture.

Lord Hurcomb would have to go in favour of Sir Robert Reid.

There was rumour going around in the spotting fraternity that '47 was to be named 'John F Kennedy.' It wouldn't have satisfied the naming criteria, had it come to pass.

Looking at the names allocated it due at look as if there was a plan. Why did Anzac and the Territorial Army suddenly appear as an infill before they got to the Firths?

Do I assume access to Carlisle Station is still restricted to travelers only,as it appears you were filming in a less obvious location and did not seem to move from there at all.

Nice article Daniel, if you are still on here!

Glad to see you going up in the journalistic world!

Also you give a useful picture of what it was like on the first post-Covid steam run, so thanks for that.

I enjoyed our trip with Tornado to Penzance ( https://pjhtransportpix.zenfolio.com/p939480031 ) and Bahamas to Stratford on Avon (https://pjhtransportpix.zenfolio.com/p39161321 ).

    Best wishes

I had travelled on the train, but after leaving the station to grab lunch, they required to see your ticket. We were warned by staff once about being too close to the edge (even though we were about 3ft away

70000 crossing the majestic Arten Gill viaduct running four minutes down. The paddock we were standing in is private land and we had permission from the landowner.

Very nice especially as not often steam is working over the Viaduct. Find it hard to get why most of the area around the Viaduct is public footpath or open access but the farmer objects

There is a rather unpleasant lady living in the house on the right. I’ve had a couple of exchanges with her. The last time was when I went up the hill on the far side for the northbound shot. I’m sure that is open access.

Everything on the east side of the railway boundary either side of Arten Gill is open access, including the classic northbound shot position @Johnb is referring to. The majority of the west side to the valley bottom isn't.

What’s the situation with the spoil mound south of the viaduct and west of the line. I was up there when I had my first run in with her

There's a small area of open access on the west side, south of the viaduct. I'd say its boundary is maybe 150ft or so south of the view of the viaduct unfortunately.

You can check what's open access and what isn't on OS Explorer 1:25000 maps. The on-line version, as used by the Streetmap website, is kept reasonably up-to-date. Here's the area around Arten Gill: https://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=378107&Y=485272&A=Y&Z=115

The problem with isolated pockets like that is getting to them when there's no footpath through them. In this case, I doubt there's much of a view of the viaduct. Much better to find out who owns the field you'd like to use and ask politely, as @FlyingScotsman4472 did.

Yes, that little pocket of open access seems very odd to be there. I'm not sure if the paddock is owned by the same farm as the fellside itself, but the problem is, as most who have been to Arten Gill know, if you ask to go on the spoil heaps on the south west overlooking the viaduct, the answer will be no.

After weeks of sun during the lockdown, it was fitting that the first rail tour back on the national network was met by thick cloud and rain. 4 useable shots from my trip to the north, Clitheroe, Langcliffe, Ais Gill and the restart at Whalley.
