I imagine that whatever is in the best interests of Scotsman will be what is acceptable on Saturday. If that's sitting in the shed, or being towed, or whatever, then that's what it needs to be.

Surely anyone planning a trip to see her after the length of overhaul fully understands that they're travelling 'at risk'? With the risk being that potentially, worst case scenario, there will be neither hide nor hair of Scotsman in sight. Everything else, including her actually moving under her own steam, is a bonus at the moment, and for some weeks/months to come.

The pressure of commerce methinks ! 46100 has no committed work in the immediate future whilst 103 / 502 / 60103 is scheduled to be working on Friday morning for a Press Call; a call that was originally intended for Wednesday morning. The pressure on Ian Riley and his staff is immense and all credit to them for their success to date - I hope they receive the credit due to them. The scheduling of Flying Scotsman's Press Appearance does seem hasty but the NRM - as "owner" - has chosen the programme and the engineering side has to work to the NRM's schedule irrespective of how tight the timescales.

Its bit more involved than that. I have a ticket for the 1130 train and to get there for that I have a 40 mile drive then various trains starting at 0541. The advance tickets on Virgin/XC cost about £50 and are non refundable. I have heard that there is a problem with the brakes on 60103 and that its going to work with 45407. If that is the case then I am sufficiently assured to go.

I agree that after all the hype and positive statements from Bury and elsewhere it would not be acceptable for it to be dragged by a DL.

Whilst largely agreeing, I'd like to see an S15 toddling along in the mid 80's. ( Speed, that is not decade!)

Black 5 No.44763 - as M4763 - also briefly carried experimental apple green. You'll find a b&w photo in Casserley's "Steam Locomotives of British Railways".

I think he has just fitted Stanier drain cocks in the overhaul. ;)

I am amazed no one on here has yet..

    a) Had a hissy fit about the diesel assistance
    b) noted that it is obviously now going to be operated by DBS? ;)

Re the brakes mentioned, have they been returned to original vacuum braked spec with the addition of an air braking system or does it remain an air braked loco with ancillary vacuum capability?
The marchington era overhaul removed all vacuum braking aspects IIRC.

Thanks, I was under a mistaken impression Gresley pacifics were VAC braked only as built ie no steam brake either. Similar to GW?

Re (a), I put down a marker and (b) I think its dual braked and with such a main line commitment it cant just be DBS, unless of course WC lose their steam licence at the end of January

Just so no one is confused, the class 31 maybe in EWS livery, but it's a preserved machine, EWS ceased to use 31's prob more than 10 years ago, so no indication of a forthcoming TOC choice.

Good to know that. Any idea what configuration Scotsman has now with vacuum train braking capability reinstated?
Can't have been a straightforward job to obtain the necessary approvals as it previously had an approved modification which itself has now been modified!
