Helicopters are governed by different rules to those affecting fixed wing aircraft as I've posted in another thread.

    "Some rules regarding low flying.
"b. Over congested areas. Over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons, an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft.

    c. Over other than congested areas. An altitude of 500 feet above the surface, except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In those cases, the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure.

    d. Helicopters. Helicopters may be operated at less than the minimums prescribed in paragraph B or C of this section if the operation is conducted without hazard to persons or property on the surface. In addition, each person operating a helicopter shall comply with any routes or altitudes specifically prescribed for helicopters by the Administrator."

Check the regulations first Fred. I've posted an excerpt from them in this and another thread. Helicopters have slightly different rules governing them under certain circumstances.

I stand corrected...(like the man with orthopaedic shoes). Thanks for the lesson on the rules of the air.

Can we please delete everything from #5292 to here? Surely this is a celebration day not one for bickering and alternative debates, important though they may be as to how low a helicopter can fly and where it can fly.

Agreed. We have an A3 back on the main line where she belongs. It's been a long wait but now is the time to enjoy what we have. Can't wait for Sunday's "night shoot" and then it's NYMR. Bring it on.

I am aware of the regulations BUT my question was whether those regulations had been breached. Like Bill (Post 5305) I am happy to be re-assured that the actions were compliant with the rules but nonetheless I feel that it was too close for comfort hence my query. Apart from the obvious risk of misjudging I am also curious asto what effect the down draught from the helicopter might have occasioned to the OHLE but - again - I am happy to be reassured that there was negligible risk.

Given the amount of film taken from the helicopters themselves and the countless bystanders, if regulations had been breached then there's enough evidence for the CAA. The helicopter in the Offord clip was well to the west of the running line so I doubt any down draught would troubling the OHLE. I bet if you were stood net to the line at that point, the helicopter would have been much further from the line than it looked on the film. Perspective plays funny tricks. Two of the most difficult things to judge where a flying object is concerned are height and distance.

Encouraged? Possibly on an aviation forum, however to raise it here where the vast majority will have no idea of aviation regulations does seem somewhat strange?

Can I suggest contacting the BBC and asking for a full copy of their paperwork and risk assessments or just a report to the CAA if it's bothering you so much?

Alternatively crack open a beer, fire up you tube and savour the return of FS to her natural habitat?

As Heisenberg demonstrated, the greater the precision you know the momentum, the less certain you are of the position. Which probably means, if you can't see it coming, it's about to hit you hard...

I saw a picture of the Scotsman Exhibition yesterday and one of those plaques is in a display about the locos visit to Australia. The headboard from the visit is also there.
