She is at the museum, my mate saw her in the south yard just a few days ago.

Last I saw it was on the TPE paint shop side of South Yard. 48151 is in the disposal shed.

Sounds like it's not really on view then. Ah well, I'll find out tomorrow.
    Thanks for the replies.

Dave - I do not know where BP is referring to but rest assured that 60103 is on display in the South Yard, just outside Station Hall, and is unlikely to move until it goes for turning on Sunday morning, prior to its next "Waverley" outing. I hope that your party have a good day tomorrow - if they like that sort of thing, remember that the 8F can be seen leaving York station for Scarborough at 11.49. The NRM viewing gallery may be a good place to observe this from.

    Have a good day

    Peter

Seen side-on, the flatwagon with 60007's boiler on is clearly visible towards the left of the private car park. This area is what I referred to as the TPE paint shop side of the South Yard, and was the vicinity in which I last saw 60103.

Ah... The NRM call this their North Yard. It is next to The Great Hall and the rail access is via the TPE depot. Their South Yard is over the road, outside Station Hall and the rail access is via Network Rail's York Yard North (Severus Junction). 60103 has spent the Bank Holiday period on the latter site as it is easier to display it there.

Ah, yes. Got me yards mixed up- didn't even realise it had gone over there, and I'm in most days. Sorry, all!

Thanks again all, and thanks for the tip on the 8F Peter. We'll try and see that.

We'll definitely have a good time.

    Cheers

There is an article in steam railway saying there is no commitment from the NRM to overhaul after the end of the current boiler certificate in 2023.
After the amount of work put in you would expect the next overhaul to not be that expensive a job.

The work done should stand it in good stead whenever the next overhaul begins, even if it is not for years after the current phase of operation ends.

i didn't like it when the NRM got hold of it, I wouldn't trust them not to stuff and mount it. If this happens a new A3 would be a good project for the A1 Trust.

The collosal investment has surely given it the strongest foundation for an immediate return though?
The reality is a lot of water will pass through the boiler in the meantime so it is pointless creating any hostages to fortune.

Question is, is the loco more valuable to the NRM as a roving ambassador up and down the country or as a popular exhibit in one place, a la Mallard?

I seem to recall that, the late Alan Peglar remarked that but for his bankruptcy in 1972/3 meaning he had to "sell" 'Scotsman to Bill McAlpine, he'd have donated her to the NRM, once he'd had enough of operating her. In the same way that the Late Bill Smith did with the G.N. tank 1247, once he'd decided he couldn't look after her reasonably.

Bear in mind the attitude of SR lately towards the NRM and it wouldn't surprise me if this was from an unknown source or even just a rumour. SR really do seem to have it in for the NRM of late.

No commitment to Plinth it either ... ?BUT think on 7 Years down the line - the numbers people will be able to project the income from an immediate return to traffic. If the Scotsman effect has tailed off and the numbers aren't that great it will cost the NRM nothing extra to let her sit for 10 years or so and then launch another Steam our Scotsman appeal to fund the overhaul and market another High profile mainline return...

A couple of days ago I was looking at a video of Scotsman passing through Chesterfield Central in 1964 on a special. The platforms were rammed with people of all ages watching it. The Scotsman effect will not tail off.

Exactly. The Science Museum/NRM can't commit to funding something like this, this far out, with public money. Doesn't mean it won't happen.

There's an election between now and then, and the end of the current spending plans only last up until 2020 (and they're practically in shreds because of Brexit).

    A complete non story.

What happens to all of the £££ she generates on the mainline, and preservation visits, does it go back in the NRM pot, or is some of it ring fenced for future maintenance.

Yes she cost a lot, a big figure to get right, but she seems to attract a premium in the railtour market, and the next overhaul, should not have to be as rigorous, after this one, you would think???
