Exactly. Can never understand why some people denigrate this loco so much. By all means denigrate the owners and what they have and haven’t done with it but it is a machine so how can it be blamed for being what it is? It has no choice in the matter.

In fairness to CoT, she is a magnificent locomotive.

However she wouldn't be here with us to enjoy, were it not for the LNER taking that record seriously and putting her into their York based museum in the first place...!!!

Don't think anyone's claimed the ton for Gladstone old chap. It was certainly doing 100mph less than that when I saw it with Stepney at Brighton 150!

Completely 60103 looks fantastic in it's natural surroundings .... and I'm a Southern type.

Well I'm listening to The World at One on Radio 4. Despite todays political dramas there is also a feature on 60103 at KX being broadcast as I write. Must be of some importance.

    At 33:44 here - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001cxrs

Simon, I have no negative thoughts regarding the loco itself, it’s the last Gresley A3 we have, it’s had several modifications throughout its working life (much as most pieces of machinery do).
The 37 in my username being a case in point.

My problem is with its current custodians and some of the decisions that they have made. It’s supposed to owned by people like me and you (the taxpayer) when it was up for sale a few years ago it was marketed as ‘The People’s Engine’

When you have to pay to cab and have your photo taken with it 60103 a machine that belongs to the Nation it’s not what I’d say is ‘for the people’ is it?

I understand it’s got to wash its face financially but you can argue the same for the likes of any heritage locomotive steam, diesel or electric.

You could very much argue the case that the British public are literally paying the price for what it’s suffered from several bad management decisions from its previous and current custodians.

But not until next year; its claim to fame is that it was the first Gresley Pacific released from Doncaster Works to the nascent LNER hence released post-Grouping in 1923.

Was it February 1923 it entered service?
Still at the crease until next year then!

My understanding is that the frames were laid down in the October of 1922. You could argue that this was when the story started for this particular engine but there again perhaps the story started with the idea to build a Pacific for the GNR, or the date that all the design drawings were completed.

Easier to stick with the date when it first entered service but this month isn't completely incorrect.
